    Ethernet Cable Crosover or Patch

I am trying to conect 2 pc's together with the Ethernet cable that came with an ADSL Router! This does not work, so am I using the wrong cable? I have recently read about cross over or patch cables!!! I am conected wirelessly, but want to transfer large amounts of data, hence the cable. Can anyone help?

A cross-over cable is used to connect two computers via their NICs, without using a hub or switch.
A straight-through network cable is just what the name implies, a cable that passes data straight through from one end to another. Straight-through cables are used for a variety of connections. (e.g. connecting a computer to a hub or switch, connecting a computer to a cable/ISDN/DSL modem, and linking switches and hubs together.)

So if you are just connecting the 2 pc together you need a crossover cable, usually called a CAT5 Crossover Patch Cable.

A glimmer of understanding glows in the night!! When I did a data transfer before, I plugged the laptop into the router... which was hard wired to the pc,.. now that the pc is wireless, the router is in another room.... Am I on the right track? I need different cable, dont I?

    Ta very much.
