Speakers work, I hear a hum, but nothing is feeding them. Ideas on what to track down and look for?

first thing is the volume muted?

start programs... accesories....entertainment.. volume control

no, when mute is on, speakers don't hum. But later on, some functions were working again. I had some sound warnings of various kinds, just no CD, and then it worked! strange!
