    DVD/CD recognition problem

I am using the Windows XP operating system. There are 2 drives on my PC which are causing a problem, CD Writer HP CD-Writer+9000 and a DVD SONY DVD-ROM DDU220e, drives F & E respectively. If I insert a blank disk into either of these drives I always get a message to "insert disk in Drive F or E". Both drives will, however, play properly if a disk with data is inserted and the PC will obviously recognise then that a disk is in the appropriate drive(s). I have checked the Device Manager which tells me that both hardware items are operating properly and I have checked for more up to date drivers, but there aren't any.
Any assistance in solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a general troubleshooting page:

If both drives are acting the same there might be some issue with the secondary channel.

Have you checked this in the Device Manager?
