right, im just wondering if its possible to keep folders at the bottom of a directory upon restart of windows? in this case in my quick launch menu
screenshot:-
this is how i want to keep the 4 folders, at the bottom, as you can see i have my shortcuts to restart , shut down , log off, and browser and desktop shorcuts in the quicklanch toolbar, but upon every restart, windows automatically bumps the folders up to the top making my 4 quick launch restart and browser buttons turn to folders looking like this
screenshot:-
as you can now see my quicklaunch restart , shut down , logoff and maxthon browser shortcuts have now been moved to the top replacing them with my folders in the toolbar. what im having to do at the moment (after each restart) is opening quick launch, draging the 4 folders onto desktop and then dragging them back into the quick launch folder again :'( im just wondering if there may be a way to make windows ignore bumping these folders up on startup??
any suggestions would be very much appriciated, thankyou for taking the time to read my post

Am not certain where you are getting that menu from.
However if you have Lock the Taskbar UNclicked then right click an empty area of the Quick Launch area then choose Open Folder which opens the Quick Launch folder in Windows Explorer.
Here you can click View and then Arrange Icons By and then UNcheck Auto Arrange
With things set as you wish REcheck Lock the Taskbar
If this does not help: What version of XP are you using? Is that the Media Edition? Are you using a third party skin?
its my quicklaunch menu, ive added folders to my quicklaunch folder to caterigize my apps and programs, hence the graphics programs , symbian programs etc etc .. but thats my problem, there is no option to turn auto arrange off in the quicklaunch folderive tried from right click the actuall quicklaunch button twice, then to open folder (thats what i have to do every re-boot to re-arrange my folders, cus windows automatically bumps the folders to the top, so i drag them out to desktop, and then back in again to get them back at bottom) right click in empty space, but in the arrange menu the auto arrange is not an option, its dulled out
ive also tried it by following path d/docs and sets/marty3/application data/microsoft/internet explorer/quick launch/ <<------- opening this folder and looking to turn off auto arrange from there, but its still dulled from there
im running winXP home edition sp2, and its 521 advanced 4-2 theme, which is a normal windows .theme file, but it also runs thru StyleXP which is a theme thingy program..
i really hope there is a way to make those 4 folders just stay at the bottomthanx for your fast reply jephree (as allways)

Do you have "Use Personalized Menus" engaged?
Just some results from searching... I never use the Quick Launch so I am learning all this from searches
Although that would suggest that it wound not auto arrange. You only get the Auto Arrange option in Thumbnails, Tiles or Icons view. It's normal for it to be greyed out in List or Details view.![]()
Then I see these links for what they're worth:
http://johnbokma.com/windows/quick-launch.html
http://www.freelaunchbar.com/
i tried changing to thumbnails and enabling auto arrange, but same thing still happensfolders bump up to the top , which in turn replaces my logoff and restart shortcuts which looks like ->
then after restart it looks like -->
due to quick launch shows the first icons at top of list, in the bottom toolbar (next to start) this is also why ive named my first 5 icons (which i want to show on the toolbar) with numbers at the front. like: 1show desktop, 2logoff, 3restart etc etc etc, so they stay at top on restart, but now ive added folders, the folders have priority over the numbers
there must be a way to lock a folder? so that nothing moves upon reboot, and icons and folders stay exactly where you want them too??
thanx again guys, really appreiciate it
martyn
EDIT
it really sucks how folders have priority, to see what i mean, open a folder, (with files in) creat a new folder, and then refresh. up she goes..

Yes I have recreated your issue and this behavior is the same for me.
Plus all my XP search links bring up no alternatives. Actually I see no use of using folders in Quick Launch although it is possible as we know. Everything appears geared to shortcut icons.
Do you really need folders in Quick Launch? You can put a shortcut to Windows Explorer in Quick Launch as an icon.
Also the shutdown restart log off options are on your start menu are they not?
Sorry this isn't an answer but just checking out possibilities![]()
i thought id solved the problem by making the folders hidden, which does stop them being bumped up on refresh, but also hides them from the actual quick launch menu as well, lol.
unfortunatly there is no restart, logoff, or shutdown on the menu of this theme -->![]()
its a very small thin start menu (one of the reasons i like the theme) but i guess its only way is like you say, do away with the folders and put all shortcuts back into the quicklaunch, its just messy like that, lol. it would of been nice to have them in the folders, all in there correct places, i mean i still can (and probally will) it just means opening the quicklaunch folder on startup, draging the folders to desktop, then back in again. unless there might be a software program to lock folders maybei dunno, thanx for your time all the same jephree, your a good man
EDIT
ive found a sulutionall ive done now is put the 4 main folders into d/ drive (which is my data drive) and just then draged them back into quicklaunch from there, this time holding down alt key (force shortcut) and now they dont get bumped up on refresh windows must not prioritise shortcuts to folders, only the actuall folders themsels..
just a simple case now of keeping them at the bottom, lol. which ill just add letter z at the start of them

Cool! I just found a similar fix by dragging my documents to Quick Launch and it worked as a shortcut.
Glad you got it going!![]()
