Is this a new problem? Were things working OK previously? Any new hardware and or software?

    Do your computer/Windows sounds work?

What media player/s are you using?

What type of media are you having problems with MP3? All?

Do you remember when and which update you installed?

Also look in your Device Manager: Start/Run/ devmgmt.msc

Look under sounds ... for any yellow exclamation marks.

Other settings and checks via the Control Panel > Sounds ...

As well as Start/Run/ dxdiag | Sound

Running a System Restore to a date before the update install might work it that update indeed caused this.

Anytime you install an update it will be listed in System Restore.

start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

i did the dxdiag run thing, it only shows me the DirectX

i tried restoring it, but the only restore point that there was available was for today @ 2:00 PM and i tried it & it did not work

In dxdiag is there a Sound tab? When you click it what is the Device listed? What is the Driver?

There were no bold dates in System Restore before today? A bold date should have a Restore Point.

If you think that this issue was related to that Windows Update do you remember which update it was or when it was? Most of these can be uninstalled if we know which one triggered this issue.

Is this the full error message that you receive:

" A Device ID has been used that is out of range for your systems"

Also what is the make and model of the computer? Is the sound on-board or have you added a Sound card?

    - MY PC is a Compaq Presario

    - I checked for Devices & there are none listed in the "Sounds" section

    - For the System Restore thing there is no date before today

    - That is the full message i get

    - I installed Windows XP into it

Is there anything listed in the Device Manager under Sound? click the +

If you think that this issue was related to that Windows Update do you remember which update it was or when it was? Most of these can be uninstalled if we know which one triggered this issue. Or are you saying that this happened after installing XP itself?

    Compaq Presario ????

We can search for drivers if we know the exact model:
