Ok, i understand what is happening but i need to make sure..............how did these "power failures" occur? Whas it from the wind or was there a storm. Whenever there is a thunder storm, to keep from getting the computer fried, it is very wise as to unplug all the cords from the wall. Just for future references.

Lightning wouldn't really make a difference, especially if the towns electric company went down. Check with them and see exactly caused the power outage. If thats not possible, then you would have to buy an XP boot disk or just go to microsoft.com. THey should have some boot disks' on line. Try that and see if that works

forgive my ignorance, but i thought boot disks were to start a dead system, mine starts o/k but only in safe.

it sound like a hardware or driver problem have you tried a repair installation?

How do you perform a reinstallation of Windows XP, sometimes called a repair installation?

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. For more information about how to do this, refer to your computer's documentation or contact your computer manufacturer. Then insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

    1. When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

    2. Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.

    3. Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.

    4. In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

    5. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

    6. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

mdm.exe is associated with Microsoft Windows process debugging system.

As you do not have a CD there is perhaps a Recovery option on your hard drive.

The instructions to access this should be in the manual. Or we can search on-line if we know the exact make and model of the computer.

As you can access Safe Mode try these troubleshooting options from Microsoft:

How to troubleshoot by using the System Configuration utility in Windows XP

All that being said this could be a hardware issue triggered by the electrical cuts.

Reloading your BIOS and motherboard drivers may be required if the msconfig can't help.

You mention a driver disk as well as a system disk. What is this system disk?

Again the exact make and model of the computer will help us search for further options.

the computer is from tiny computers it is an amd64 3400+,bios american megatrends inc ver 07.00t,512ram,200g hard drive,i have tried chkdsk, which it ran o/k but at the end, i think it was the result page came and went so fast i could not read it.the system driver c/d that came with the computer has writen on it,this cd contains a complete copy of all the drivers on your machine,e,g sound, display, cd-rom, and modems, and also the technical mauals for the motherboard.i have explored the disk on another machine and it works fine, but on this machine i can't explore or open the disk,is this a safe mode thing? there is also a c/d called system reload, i looked on the computer makers website and they state machines are now pre-loaded with xp and do not come with the machines,so surely as my machine is licenced to hold a copy of xp i should be able to get one from microsoft?(just a thought).UPDATE i have just tried to install the reload c/d and got, unable to determine bios lock, pls contact system manufacturer, wich i did and the answer i got was, there is a known fault with bios info and they are trying to prepare a c/d with missing files/info on it in the week or 2.

the bios unlock c/d,i have found out, is only for those with warranty,so the restore disk might as well be thrown away if like me is out of date.i have had to format my h/d and buy a win xp c/d,all is now o/k.
