i'm not very good with computers so im goin to explain this step by step. when i turn on my pc it tells me that is very important to check the disk for consistency, every single time i turn it on. when it's done checking, on the same screen, it says that there is something wrong with system.log and software.log files and that system32 is not valid. then it reboots itself and eveything starts all over againg.
sorry i dont know if this questiong belongs here or not but i wanna know if i can install an old hardrive on a new pc without formatting it?
Is this a new problem? Were things working OK previously? Any new hardware and or software?
So to verify: you cannot boot into XP? You are stuck in a CHKDSK loop?
Can you boot into Safe Mode? Repeatedly tap F8 after your BIOS POST/Computer Logo screen but before XP tries to load.
Also can you please post the error messages verbatim.
Next: what type of XP CD do you have? A retail version or was XP preinstalled on your computer?
If the latter what is the exact make and model of the computer? And what type of disks came with it?
--------------------------
As to the hard drive question: yes you can install any drive as a slave without formatting.
If you intend to put an Operating System on it you may need to format a partition to accomplish this.

yes i can boot in safe mode but CHKDSK shows up and the same thing happens.
that pc can with windows 98 installed but i upgraded it to XP.
it is a DELL, Dimension L600cx. can you be more especific with the types of disks?
the same thing happened to my friend's pc, right about the time.
i dont know what messages verbatim means.
As to CHKDSK always starting see this page:

The disk would be your XP upgrade then. You will need this to run repairs (if necessary).
Verbatim means: Word for word. If you are receiving error messages please post them Word for word. Most are easily searchable that way.
You said: "it says that there is something wrong with system.log and software.log files and that system32 is not valid." We would like to see the exact message.
As to the added hard drive: you added an additional hard drive? A slave?
Did you have this problem right then? The next/first boot?
Hey jephree,
thanks for all your efforts to help save my PC but it's ok now. I bought a new PC and it has intiviruses, NORTON and MCAFEE. What was wrong with the old PC is that it was too old, somebody in my house got it around 1999 to 2001, and that it was completely filled wit viruses and those things that are not helpful to your PC. it was infected with many, many viruses . i was able to save it by uninstalling that old HD and installing it in my new PC. The same thing happened but i wasn't scared because the new one was protected. Then i ran all my intiviruses and they deleted all those bad things. the old HD was clean now. Later i installed the old HDD back in the old PC and it worked perfectly fine, very slow compared to my new PC. And maybe you remember i had some harddrive issues--- dont worrry about it, i was able to install it in my new PC and access all my files. My new PC works just fine, im able to play games and do things i couldnt do before . Im going to give my old one away. thanks for everything.![]()

Glad to hear it and thanks for the thanks!
I find it interesting that this new PC came with both Norton and McAfee.
Although they both have many different programs e.g. firewall; system works; etc. it is generally advised to run only one Anti-Virus at a time. Otherwise conflicts could hinder your Operating System.
oh dont get confused. i installed Norton from an old CD my sister's labtop came with. i wanted to be extra sure nothing could get throug so that's why i had them running. i know what u say about having 2 antivirus runnning at the same time, a pop up window told me about it. i thought about deleting one of them but they are not completly the same; one can find things like viruses, spyware, worns ,etc. that the other cant and the other way around. i dont know which one is the best.
how can i close this Thread so people dont try to answer me about my questions?
You can't but I can![]()
Thanks for the update and the thanks!
