Error message when opening file saved from disc to laptop in xp
Hi, Wondering if anyone can help? I just brought new laptop and started putting some files on it from disc, which i created on old laptop which was windows me. Now when i open the files on new laptop which has windows xp, there is an error message stating that another document is open in the same nameand that can not run 2 docs with the same name. However do not have another document open. I click cancel and can access document. This is really annoying me as it is on every document. some also say that it is open already and do i want to create a copy!! Any ideas why this is doing this and how i can get it to stop???? Any help would be appreciated thanks Jo

Can you post a few examples of the path of these files/documents that cause this behavior?
e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Pictures\ ... etc.
Perhaps you might want to try the File and Settings Transfer Wizard (if relevant).
HOW TO: Use Files and Settings Transfer Wizard in Windows XP

As to the Wizard I should have posted this more helpful link:

Hi,
The files have already been deleted from old computer the files are now just on disc, so if im right the wizard will not work as need to have saved documents from old computer in a particular format??
When you asked for examples of the route im not sure if i understand right, but i have saved the files just onto the desk top and open from there????

In that case the Wizard will not work
Post a few names of the files. I was curious if they are files that would already be on XP.
Another test would be create a folder in My Documents and move one of these files there.
After the move does trying to open cause the same error?

I tried saving documents to a folder in my documents and did the same thing. It seems that the excel documents display error message with red circle saying "a document with the name'FILE NAME.xls.' is already open. You cannot open two documents with the same name, even if the documents are in different folders. To open the second document, either close the document thats currently open, or rename one of the documents. When i click ok it allows me to access and work on documents and save changes but if open again comes up with same message even if i save as new document. And the word documents create a message with yellow ! saying that C:\... FILE NAME is being used by MY NAME do you want to make a copy? If i click cancel or okay allows me to access and work on document. And again if i save as or save when opening again dispalys the same message.
I have the files/documents saved on disc and memory stick
This is driving me mad!!!!!!!!!

I have just tried creating new word document from scratch and it does the same message when opening it up! Do you think maybe there is a problem with word or excel when i installed them???
-
I will search those errors.
Just one thought: you say you saved these to the desktop? Have you removed the disk?
Perhaps the desktop copy is seeing the disk copy?
Is your name (MY NAME) the same name that was on the other computer?
Another test would to create another administrator user with a different name and try that.

As to your last post do these errors only relate to Office files?
-
I only tried word, but only have word and excel installed. I have yet to install publisher which i have some documents created in there aslo.
I think the name would of been mine also in the old computer as i installed programmes in my name. I will try changing admin name see whats happens!!

Try to create just a Word Pad note and save.
start > All Programs > Accessories > Word Pad
