    Media crashes, and closes

Recently, I've been unable to watch or listen to any media without having the program crash on me. I used to be able to watch videos, or listen to mp3s, with no problems.

I started out using Windows Media Player. I began to get errors with the player closing, so I decided to switch over to winamp, and got the same thing. I've got the latest up-to-date versions, and I've uninstalled/installed each several times.

I can listen to mp3s for a little while, and then the program gets an error.

I have 2 problems with videos. In winamp, I can watch a movie for a little while, and then I get an error and it closes. In Windows Media Player, I can watch a movie for a little while and then it closes, or it won't even show the movie, just a black screen. I can reboot and usually watch the movie, but at some point I'll open Windows Media Player again, not be able to view the movie, and have to restart the computer in order to be able to watch it.

I've also noticed that the same crashing occurs with Adobe Premiere, Nero, and pretty much any software that deals with media. All of my P2P sharing programs will run for a little while, and then just close out, with no error message.

Does anyone have any insight on possible routes I could take to correct these problems?

When you do get errors what are they exactly?

Also: look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id & Description especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.

How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

Also view your Error Log via:
    [1] Start Menu
    [2] Help and Support
    [3] Pick a Task
    [4] Tools
    [5] Advanced System Information
    [6] View the Error Log

Have you run virus scans? etc.

Also rather than the reboot media players sometimes become unresponsive. They are still running in the Task Manager tho. Open the Task Manager (right click on the Task Bar) > Processes > and end the media process. This should make it available for use again.

Faulting application winamp.exe, version 5.1.3.387, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x07bc771d.

Source: Application Error ID : 1000

Do you need any other info? This occurred around 25 times over a 2 hour period, same error each time.

Also received this error a couple times:

Hanging application winamp.exe, version 5.1.3.387, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

Source : Application Error ID: 1002

    Anything under Description?

faulting module unknown makes it more difficult.

We can try to trace fault address 0x07bc771d if you want to load the following tools:

    To install Windows Support Tools

You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.

    1.
Insert the Windows CD into your CD-ROM drive.

    2.
Click No if you are prompted to reinstall Windows.

    3.
When the Welcome screen appears, click Browse this CD.

    4.
    Go to the \Support\Tools folder.

For complete Setup information, refer to the Sreadme.doc file available in this folder.

    5.
    Double-click Setup.exe.

    6.
Follow the instructions that appear on your screen.

    Warning

    • Certain Support Tools, if used improperly, might cause your computer to stop functioning. It is recommended that only experienced users install and use Support Tools.

    Note

    • The Support Tools and the Support Tools Help are in English only.

    • The Setup program installs all the Support Tools files on your hard disk and requires a maximum of 14 megabytes (MB) of free space.

    • Setup creates a Windows Support Tools folder within the Programs folder on the Start menu. For information about individual tools, click Tools Help. Tools with Windows interfaces can be selected from the Tools menu.
Then you can run pstat from a command prompt: start/run cmd

Pstat can tell you what driver is loaded at what address.
Just type pstat in a command prompt.
The bottom section will list drivers and their memory address.
In this case look for: 07bc771d

Also: what about the virus angle? Have you run recent scans?

Also: when you have uninstalled/reinstalled these programs: have you followed up with a file search as well as a registry cleaner?
