I did not have the restore option on. I have it on now.
I have no other problem with the pc.

As a first try you could do a System Restore:

start All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System Restore

I had put the system restore option only after the problem. Should I go for system restore with the option on?

If it wasn't on then there would be no point.

I thought that you meant that you did not set a restore option within Xcleaner.

I am unfamiliar with Xcleaner. Is there not a Backup/restore option within?

Unfortunately no, atleast not in the free version.

I briefly looked at Xcleaner. For the future I would recommend both Spybot S&D as well as AdAware as seen here:
    http://www.d-a-l.com/help/showthread.php?t=32403

    Also for general cleaning: http://www.ccleaner.com/

These tools have been tried and tested over years and they all create backups.

That being said let's see if we can get your connection back.

Can you describe the exact connection type? What happens when you try to connect? Any error messages?

I am using2 computers simultenously at my office, both are windows XP and connected to the same network. I am now communicating with you through the desk top.
I get a error message during start up "could not initialize network connections"
After the computer is started, clicking on the explorer gives no error message, it just askes to redial, showing a dial network icon or giving an option to work offline.
On clicking on the local area network connection situation it displays the folllowing message:
" there is a possibility that the pc cannot access the internet or the network resource, the network address is not assigned to the computer"
There is nothing wrong with our network as only my note pc is having the problem, I have interchanged the lan cables with my desktop to check and it gave the same results so there is no problem with the lan cable to my note pc.
The network settinmgs are on automatic detection and therefore there is no need to re install (as told by the network administrator)
Since i am using a Japanese OS I have translated the above myself and therefore the wordings may sound unfamiliar to you. i hope you can understand.

Have you rebooted since this problem occurred? If not please try that.

If you have and or that doesn't help try the following on both computers and compare the results:

Go to start Run and type: cmd

In the new window type: ipconfig /all

Yes I have rebooted many times, every time I tried something general.
Therefore I followed your instuctions with the following results:

IP address I have been told each computer has their own IP address in our office therefore there is a difference.

Please check you settings via: start > Control Panel > Network Connections >

Right click the Local Area Connection then click Properties

Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then Properties

Is it set to automatic detect in all areas?

Also can you confirm the difference between Desktop and notebook as to subnet mask

    (desktop)subnet mask : 255.255.255.0
    (laptop)subnet mask : 255:255.0.0

They should both be reading 255.255.255.0
