Glad you have a new machine!

What do you mean by: "I salavaged the old z1 back, for data recovery"?
Did you get the laptop working or did you remove the hard drive?

Repairing would be local shops unless you want to send it back to Sony but being out of warranty I doubt that it would be worth it.

If you cannot get any power even after trying all the troubleshooting above then I doubt that it is worth anything but spare parts.

I claimed it on my insurance, thats right they sent me A FE11S ! that must be a good deal if you look at the spec, for a 3 year old Z1 that i paid 850 for off ebay, 3 years later the model its matched up with costs 1300 and a spec that loads better.

only problem is the new machine is a bit bulky compared(no using this one in the bath !)

anyway I'm not complaining as it arrived in the post today.

They said I could get the HD back if I paid a salavage fee of 25 pound, then they said I could have the whole lot back for 75pound plus VAT.

thought all spare parts would be worth it, instead of having to try and get around paying 25 just for them to post me the HD back (otherwise it would of been a DPA job).

So I now have to find someone to get this data off 4 me unless I can get it working, have not opened the returned z1 yet, but will look later to see if they actually bothered trying to fix it.

the local shop told me the connector would cost £20, but they did not have any in.

they said they could recover the lot for 20/25 quid, I said its just the case of wanting some of the documents....they said ok a 10er.

they charge £50 an hour they said, wtf who do they think they are !.

Will see if i can get a connector online somwhere, anyway will be a waste of time if the drive has had it any way I assume ? So I might just take it down to them to see if it works ;-)

Live in norfolk, I agree there is a certain amount of risk thus the reason of not wanting to pay £10 both ways on carrage only to be told they want 3 figures to do a new motherboard etc etc.

the usual wear and tear fo the Z1 model being the left mouse button the silver has worn through to the white. There is a scratch where the intel/windows stickers should be(east to cover with new stckers)

The best outcome would be if i could get it cheaply fixed(though any company i know rob you imo), its a great machine especially on the batteries. Any way it will probally end up on ebay as spares.

The local shop wanted 20 for a converter cable, on ebay 2.50 +99p P&P.... did not take long to decide. Least this way it will show whether its a dead drive (how do you get data when its dead ?).

If the drive is ok, i'll obv put it back in (will not know till at least mon/tues). The mystery is why it will not power on !.

Its was HDD failure, got my data and done a format, drive is all ready to go again now.

Only problem is now finding out what the power up failure is, arrrgghhh.

Be handy if I can just find out whats up with this bit, anyone that has any info on why machine won't power up after taking them apart is going to be greatfully recieved.

Did you run through all these steps from Sony:

The notebook computer does not turn on.

Follow this procedure to troubleshoot power issues on a notebook computer that does not turn on.

IMPORTANT: While following this procedure, note the LED status at each step. This will provide additional information for the technician if repair becomes necessary.

    1. Connect the AC adapter [FIG. 1] into a known working AC outlet and to the notebook.

    NOTES:
    * Do not connect the AC adapter to a surge protector or extension cord.
    * The AC adapter can be confirmed as receiving power by ensuring the LED on the adapter is lit. If the LED is not lit when plugged into a working AC outlet, the adapter must be replaced.
    2. Attempt to turn on the notebook.
    3. Press and hold the Power Switch for 15 seconds.
    4. Attempt to turn on the notebook.
    5. Remove the battery.
    6. Disconnect the AC power adapter.
    7. Press and hold the Power Switch for 15 seconds.
    8. Connect the AC power adapter.
    9. Attempt to turn on the notebook.

NOTE: If the notebook turns on without the battery, connect and charge the battery for 24 hours.
    10. Disconnect all external devices that are connected to the computer.

NOTE: These devices include, but are not limited to, a modem, floppy disk drive, network connection, USB device, printer, keyboard, or mouse.
    11. Attempt to turn on the notebook.
    12. Remove any additional Random Access Memory (RAM) that was installed in the computer.
    13. Attempt to turn on the notebook.
    14. If the issue is still unresolved after completing the troubleshooting steps suggested, service may be required.
