    Unhappy XP problem.

    Hello,

I think I have a problem with my computer: every time I bring up the Task Manager, the green icon tells me that my computer usage is 100%. Surely this is too high? What do you think can be causing this?

Thanks very much for your help.

    I get this message displayed:

"The following errors occurred when this message was submitted:
The message you have entered is too short. Please lengthen your message to at least 1 characters".

Please explain, as my message was roughly:

"I think I have a problem with my computer: every time I click on Task Manager, I am told that my CPU usage is 100%. Surely this mustn't be so. Is it due to the number of programmes I have running at startup? How can I reduce them?

Thanks very much for your help.

You will get that message if your post is a quote with no additional text for example.

The CPU usage can be caused by numerous things and although it is good to keep your start menu trim no amount of idle programs should max out the CPU.

First, if you haven't already, reboot. See if the exact behavior occurs again. Next check what processes are consuming usage using the Task Manager.

This could also be a virus and or malware issue. Do you protect and scan in these areas?

Windows built in start editor is found via start/run msconfig | startup.

Here you can uncheck items that you do not want to start. There are also many programs that go far beyond Windows in info and ease of use. Ccleaner is one. The startup editor is under Tools | Startup: http://www.ccleaner.com/

Another that shows you absolutely everything starting is Autoruns: http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/fr...autoruns.shtml
