It may be the sasser worm.

I think you need to follow instruction in the spyware thread and post a hijack log

have you tried safe mode? you can then access hijack this to post a log..... if you have an xp disk you could consider a repair install

Whether virus related or not it appears the only solution is a repair install:

    http://groups.google.com/groups?q=ls...=10&hl=en&lr=&

From this iQon site there are instructions to repair XP. Follow this path:

    http://www.iqonsupport.ie/

    Hi jephree
i have tried the solution on the iqon site to no avail (i am still waiting for a reply since friday)

not much help from the other link you gave me except that "a repair install can only be done with a Windows XP
CD, NOT a "System Restore CD," which most PC makers send out with new
systems. " which is worrying me because there is no xp disk just the built in system restore which does not solve the problem

thanks for everyones response will let you know the outcome.

The only other thought I have is to try to run the Recovery Console via the 6 floppy boot disks.

I am not sure how this will work going thru the iQon setup but here are the details:

If you cannot boot into Windows I would suggest first trying the Recovery Console:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;307654

How to obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310994

To try to fix the boot:

Assuming that your XP is on C: then:

    Type:

    FIXMBR C:

then enter. After that completes type:

    FIXBOOT C:

then enter. After that completes type:

    BOOTCFG /rebuild

then enter. After that completes type:

    EXIT

    then reboot.

If in the process you are asked to run chkdsk say YES.

Also after the BOOTCFG /rebuild you will be prompted to:

    C:\Windows
    1. Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All):
    2. Enter Load Identifier: (Custom description for an operating system loading from the Boot menu)
    3. Enter Operating System Load Options: (that is: /fastdetect)

    Reply:
    1. Yes
    2. XP
    3. /fastdetect

    hi jephree

    did as you suggested
it gave me another boot up option XP but i still get the same error message

    sass.exe
when trying to update a password this return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is incorrect

i am tempted to reformat and fresh install a brand new xp on it, but i think i might wait to hear back from iqon
