Floders,Subfolders will not open in Start Menu or Explorer

This is my problem. I have XP Professional W/SP2 I noticed that the folders(My Documents,My Music, My Pictures)in the Start Menu would not open, when double click on Error message would pop-up "Error-108 an Unknown error occurred". I then went to Explorer for futher investigation. When in Explorer I would click on the folder in the left pane the right pane would open up but any subfolder in right pane would give the same error code. I could go back to the left pane where subfolder was and open it up thier and access the files in the right pane. So the steps that I took for this problem is as follows: I purchased Registry Mechanic and ran it. It repaired the registry but this didn't take care of the problem. I also ran my Software in safemode to see if I had the same problem and I did. I ran Chkdsk/f and SFC neither of these task corrected the problem. I didn't have a time frame when this happen so I went back to farthest restore point and ran it but the problem exist there too.
I appericate any help that I can get to correct this problem.

Do you have a retail Microsoft XP CD or was XP pre-installed (OEM)?

If the former run a Repair Install. This will leave your programs and data untouched. You will just need to reinstall your Windows Updates.

If the latter look in the manual for the method of a non-destructive recovery.

After everything else that you have tried I really see no other solution.

Yes you will loose SP2 and all Windows Updates.

You can pre-download it to your hard drive for re-install:

Also for now or the future you can create a slipstreamed XP SP2 CD by combining the XP CD and the SP2 download on your hard drive:
