    Post PC shuts down abruptly

    hi
my computer crashes as if power cable has been pulled off. it happens somtimes even before os is loaded. i suspect cpu overheating as the prob. moreover while playing games the control goes awry and the even when i leave the pressed key it acts as if the key were still pressed. and then a beep sound comes simultaneously. also could it be a BIOS prob. can a rom bios be corrupted?

So you are saying the computer just shuts off? And also sometimes freezes during games?

Does this happen often? Regularly? Is this a new problem?

It could be several things. Why do you suspect the CPU? Could be the PSU as well as your Graphics Card or Chipset. Don't think the BIOS would be a direct cause.

What is the make & model of the computer? How old is it?

See if you can run the D-A-L Hardware scan and post it back as well:

    im so grateful u r helping :-)

now u just said it man. the pc just shuts off and freezes momentorily during games (recoil to be particular)

it does happen atleast twice or thrice a week and is happening for 8-9 months(the shut off thing)
for the game ,whenever i run the thing ,it happens every now and then.

pls bear with me as the h/w scan didn't run on my m/c instead some kind of HTML script was displayed in the browser (opera) when i clicked the link.

as far as i think my graphics and sound are onboard
    intel 845 GL chipset
    celeron 2GHz
    256Mb RAM
    40 GB HDD
    Directx 9.0
basically it is an assembled PC about 2 1/2 yr old

now CPU was primary suspect coz last month i opened the heat sink and found lil carbon on it
s'one on internet had the same prob later resolved by applying a paste b'ween CPU and heatsink
but it didnt work for me

BIOS was suspect coz the sys time reported in BIOS menu is diff from OS
secondly the time keeps changing in the OS by itself every day

i also think PSU could be the cuilprit coz i installed a new UPS system an year ago. lemme check out with my vendor if u suggest?

    once again thanx :-p
    regards
    atul

The paste between the heatsink and CPU should have always been there. This is a standard installation application.

The fact that the computer justs shuts down is definitely a hardware rather than Windows' issue.

The BIOS clock is possibly the battery but I doubt it. This could be a Windows' issue. Go to start | Control Panel | Date and Time | Internet Time
Check or uncheck the box by Automatically synchronize with an Internet time server

I cannot find the manufacturer of your motherboard P4I45Gx_PE
AMI, your BIOS, has this info: http://www.ami.com/support/bios.cfm#one

Also: look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id especially of errors that seem to coincide with a crash. Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.

There is a memory diagnostic here: http://www.memtest86.com/

There is a Seagate (hard drive) diagnostic here: http://www.seagate.com/support/seato...toold_reg.html

Both these diagnostics will run off of boot floppies. Follow the instructions to create the floppies.

This also might be worth a try: http://www.freshdevices.com/freshdiag.html
