windows explorer has encounted a problem - pop-up

Hi, I get a pop-up message saying, windows explorer has encounted a problem, when i go into the folder of a certain file (video, realplayer) i have just downloaded and unzipped. (It doesnt happen to the majority of files i download - not that i download loads though). Then i click ok, it freezes my computer, closes the folder window and then my computer runs like normal again. But im not able to run the downloaded file. I had a look at the error report and im not sure if this is relevant to you but this was in that report:

    AppName: explorer.exe
    AppVer:6.0.2900.2180
    ModName: xvid.dll
    offset:00047cde

Its not an important download or anything, but it is a legal download so it shouldnt be happening. I have also found that others can open this file so the file cant be corrupt.

Just to let you know for background i first posted the problem in this forum and had great help cleaning my computer from various things. However this problem remained.

ok, normally, when yuo download an .exe file, it will 90% contain a virus. Maybe yuo can't play this type of file on these certain apps. I assume you have real player and windows media player, but if you only tried it on realplayer, try opening it with WMP

There are a few ideas in this thread:

    http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?p=339021

The easiest (if it works for you):

    I replaced the xvid.dll file.

Get a new copy here and then do a search of your HD for xvid.dll and replace it.

Hi, i did the above, changing xvid.dll but still the problem remains. I find it hard to change what to open the file with as the pop-up comes up. But i did click on the file to play it in WMP but it said it had a problem and i recieved a drwatson postmortem debugger message. Aswell as one from WMP and windows explorer.

Should i try deleting this (saw it mentioned in that forum): xvid.ax and then delete it from the recycle bin? I thought i would check with you first. Sorry guys im just not that computer savvy. But thanks for your help.

I would say yes. You can always reload it if you want. I didn't see the post that you refer to but from another I see that you must exit explorer.exe in order to uninstall or install xvid. You probably should reboot as well.

Download the latest build from www.koepi.org or wherever remove any previous installs of xvid then close all unnecessary applications start the install eg(with Koepi's when it asks for language DO NOT PROCEED YET hit Ctrl+Alt+Del end task "explorer" then continue install WHEN FINISHED go back to task manager select "file" then "new task" type in "explorer" and you should be good to go.

the reason unistalling then reinstalling xvid doesn't work very well is explorer will hold the xvid.ax in cache and even if you uninstall and reboot explorer will continue to load the old xvid.ax although running the installation when explorer is closed did update the "xvid.ax" to one which doe not conflict with media player 9.
