Re: winodws problem its just killing me
So you cannot get past the XP screen now?
But it was OK for a few days?
If this clicking is persistent it would be great to determine what is clicking.
-
well i cant get into winodws but i get the windows loading screen
it was fine a few days ago (execpt for the time it froze brfore)
ill try to figure out what it is thats clicking. could the ghaphics crad click or cause something to click? and what would the fan have to do with it?
-
well when i just started it up i got this on a black screen
Reboot and Select proper Book device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device
this is what i got a the very very buginning of all of this should i try running powermax? could it just be faulty connections?
and i left i on that screen for a min or 2 and it never clicked execpt once at the start and im pretty shure it was from the HDD also this isnt like a lould click its not really lould at all if that helps
-
About the only things in there that could click would be fans or drives.
The drive cables could be faulty. Also a faulty Power Supply could be triggering this.
If your BIOS is not seeing the hard drive it is probably one or the other. If the board slots were faulty that wouldn't be good but also not likely.
If I had to bet here I would fault the power supply but that's just what I've seen in most cases where the BIOS intermittently but persistently cannot detect drives.
-
so what should i do to fix fulty power supply just cheak all connections? same thing for the drive cables?
-
As a first try you could unplug and replug all the connections. Power and ribbons. Ribbon cables are inexpensive if you need to replace them. You might try to move the one from your Secondary channel (DVD/CD) just to test that on the Primary channel (hard drive).
If the Power Supply is failing you would need to replace it. You can get a decent one for @ $50 to $100

But anyway you could also try PowerMax again. It will only run if the BIOS is detecting the hard drive tho.
-
o ok so was it right before in that both my HDDs both failed?
-
I've had PowerMax report errors before then say everything was OK. Never had one say the drive was failing tho. A failing power supply could cause all sorts of discrepancies. After your system is stable you can recheck all the old drives. If they are OK you can always use them for extra storage.
I think the best way to proceed is to check the physical connections (unplug/replug).
If the problem persists try a new hard drive ribbon cable.
If it still persists you probably should consider a new power supply (PSU).
Just to verify: when you get the error "Reboot and Select proper Book device" this is coming from the BIOS?
In other words the BIOS is not detecting your hard drive?
-
yea its right after my bios screen and thats what ive always gotten errors on and stuff like that and should i just totally do all of the connections? well all the power ones and then ribbions
-
I think so. Just to eliminate that as an issue.
If you don't have an extra IDE (ribbon) cable I would borrow the one on the Secondary (DVD/CD) and temporarily use it on the Primary (hard drive) channel.
Also look at all your white plastic electrical connectors. Look for any brown or burn marks.
If you separate all these electrical connectors just glance at the pins and sockets for any burns.
