I have been searching for answers to my Many computer problems. I have an emachine D2046 running xp pro service pack 1 a while back my power supply fried I had it replaced now I don't have sound or usbs or task bar my 6 in one reader is gone also I do have icons I can only get on line using task manager or in safe mode I can't link to links don't have a clue why so I can't scan on any online scanners If I try and paste the address the copy works but the paste doesn't its greyed out so if I manully type it in the address bar I get there but it won't let me scan Any ideas on what I should do? Thanking in advance
- Did all this star to happen just after you replaced the power supply?
- Check if all the drivers are properly installed (right clikc [my computer]->[properties]->[hardware]->[device manager]). If there are any question or exclamation marks on the yellow caution sign then those devices need your attention (most of the time just proper driver).
- Make sure that no wires have been disconnected from the motherboard while replacing the power supply! Are USBs and sound you are referring to mean those on the front of the computer tower?
- If you can boot up normally into the Safe Mode then click on [Start]->[Run]->Type:"msconfig"->Click:[OK]. Go to the [Startup] tab and uncheck all the programs that are there. Go back to the normal mode and see if the problem is still there.
- Try downloading and running this program: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm
Good luck!
Thank you for replying there are no ? or exclamation marks . I am afraid to mess around inside the case but maybe wires are loose I wasn't home when a friend replaced the power supply but apparently my keyboard didn't work and they used my old one the newer one was a usb keyboard I believe so like I said it maybe loose something. I will check it out. Thank you. After the power suppy was replaced I had a task bar and was trying to fix the usb problems I had emailed emachine and this is what they told me to doOriginally Posted by abes

After I did that thats when I lost my task bar. Emachines now suggests I do a full system restore. I'll make sure something isn't loose before I try that. Once again Thank you
Hey Chickensrus!
Couple more questions and suggestions:
- Did you use the program to fix taskbar? (link in my previous post)
- Were those USB ports on the front of the tower on on the back? (not working ones)
- When you open the computer case make sure there are no these kind of cables hanging around the case:
- If there are some then you need to refer to your motherboard's manual to find where to plug them. If you can't find the manual you can look for this type of connectors on your motherboard:
They may appear in the form of just pins, but they will for sure have a little USB label next to them!
- The last thought is that you may want to restore your BIOS settings to default and see if things work. Also take a look at the vendor's website and check for any BIOS updates available. (Not necessary if the system restore fixes the problem)
Good luck!
Thank you for the reply
I believe its both the front and back for the usb ports. I have tried to upload pictures from my camera from both the front and back and nothing happens. I did try the task bar fix but it didn't work. I am going to wait till my guru friend visits to check out the case I am afraid I will fry something lol Thank you for all your help and for the pictures too I am a visual person . I will let you know what we find in the case when it happens, with work and all its hard to get a time when I am home and guru friend is free. Soon I hope.
Ok... It's good to know that you will have some guru ;] look at it! I hope you guys solve the problem, but if you will run into any difficulties then we are all here waiting for some new riddles ;]
P.S. As long as you take the power cord out of the computer, do all that needs to be done inside and then hook it back to the power it should not fry it! [Well... as long as you don't interpret "all that needs to be done" as "put the paper clips into free PCI and RAM slots" :P :P]
Good luck mate!
lol my guru couldn't make it so I decided to look myself I don't see anything loose I reformatted as to the above instructions and am back on line with a task bar but still no sound no usbs and no 6 in one card reader bummer maybe when the power supply died it killed something too I think I can link now for tests so I will go to hardware test and post hereOriginally Posted by abes

I am still messing with this on my own I now know I have no sound card installed I did look in the case and nothing seems amiss I tried to play a cd and I got this
There is no sound card
You either do not have a sound card installed on your computer or it is not functioning properly. If you do not have a sound card installed, you must install one before you can listen to audio in a digital media file. If you do have a sound card installed, refer to its documentation to troubleshoot the problem.

Could it be that things got fried when the power supply went I guess I will have to take to a repair place. Thanks all for your help Great place here![]()
