    Cool CD Drive problem

    Hi,

    Can anyone help me?

XP will not recognize the CD drive for SOME CDs.

For instance, I just installed OFFICE 2003 without difficulty, but the WINDOWS CD is not recognized.

If I place a CD in the drive and go to "My Computer", the icon says there's no CD there. If I type E:\ into "Run" it tells me to place a CD into drive E.
"Devices" shows no problems and claims the CD drive is working properly.

Can anyone tell me if there's a file missing somewhere or maybe point to another cause and its remedy?

Will it see ANY CD's at this point? e.g. does it still see OFFICE?

My troubleshooting tips would be to determine if it is the disks or the drives.

Hence my question if it could read any disks at all.

Did this all happen after installing Office?

If some disks work but not others I would suspect the disks.

If it reads none then go to the Device Manager & right click the drive & choose Uninstall.

Then reboot & XP should re-detect it & re-install it.

    Thanks for your interest.

The drive is selective. I just randomly tested five CDs. It recognized the Brother printer disk, Adobe Indesign and Serif Page Plus but could not see the WINDOWS XP disk or the Bible program.

I was/am searching for similar issues. Do you still have the problem? If so I will post any finds asap.

Is this a new problem? Were you able to use the Windows & or Bible program previously?

Do you have more than one CD/DVD drive? Do you have third party burning software?

Can you Boot your XP CD?

Yes, this is a new problem. It showed up after I "cleaned" my computer using "Hijackjthis".
That's why I suspect I deleted something I shouldn't have!! I just can't find out what it might have been. I was able to use all CDs previously.

I have two CD drives (E:\ and G:\) and the same problem seems to be present with both.

If I went to Device Manager and deleted E-IDE CD-956E/AKV and Sony CD-RW CRX225E and then rebooted the computer, do I understand correctly that the two devices would be reinstalled? I'm nervous about losing the lot!

I really do appreciate the intererst you have taken.

I've had a similar problem with DVD drives - the issue was with some of the software recently installed. Have you tried going to the Safe Mode and checking if the drives recognize the "unrecognizable" discs?

    No, but I will.

    Thanks for the tip, Matt.
