Is this a new problem? Were things OK previously?

Does this happen with all disks? Blank disks as well?

Change this setting to see if you get an error message:

rt. click My Computer then click Properties then Advanced then Startup and Recovery Settings then unclick Automatically restart

Perhaps try a System Restore to a date prior to this issue.

After you change the automatic reboot setting does it stick or does it revert to unchecked?

So the computer shuts down & reboots with no error message?

When you try to use a virtual drive it is the same behavior as the physical drive?

Also: look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id especially of errors that seem to coincide with a crash.

I cant do a system restore b/c i have formatted my comouter and after re installing XP Pro it still does it! and when it restarts is says your computer has just had as seriouse error or something on the lines of that! and when i try a virtual drive it dose the samething as the physical drive

These are a few suggestions I see trying to search your issue:

Check to see if the CD ROM drive and the HDD are connected to the same IDE
controller on the same cable. If so, you might want to separate them so
that the CD drive is alone as single and no longer on that same cable.
Please see if the Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.0 or Direct CD 5.0 program is
installed on your computer. If yes, please contact Roxio, or visit the
following Roxio Web site to download and install the updated driver for
Easy CD Creator 5.0 for Windows XP:
    http://www.roxio.com

Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find
technical support. This contact information may change without notice.
Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this third-party contact
information. To work around this issue, remove Roxio Easy CD Creator or
    Direct CD.
Also suggested is to uninstall the drives in Safe Mode & then reboot which will reinstall the XP drivers.

And just out of curiosity while in Safe Mode see if the drives will work properly.

I did see one issue where a faulty power supply was causing this symptom.

Did you find any errors in your Event Viewer?

I am thinking that if your reboot is not being stopped by the XP setting then it is being triggered by hardware & not thru XP.

If none of the above help try disconnecting one of the drives & see if it affects the other.

I know of nothing that is free.

HMonitor is widely recommended (1 week trial):

Hi guys - I recently bought a new HP DVD 1135t writer since my old CD-Rom (DVDRW IDE16x) wasn't reading cd's anymore. After installing it, I first received an error message saying ATAPI incompatible, press F1 to resume, and carried on.
When i tried to load a CD my PC shut down and does this every time i try to load a cd.
I tested the power supply and all looks fine, the fan seems to be working fine, tried changing the jumpers, even returned it to the shop and got a new HP DVD writer, and it still won't work!!
I'm running out of ideas. Anyone have a clue what I should do - other than return it and get my money back?
    Cheers
