    Question Diagnostic help

My son recently did some work on my second computer and on completeion sent it back to me by an overnight courrier. When I tried to start it it would run for a few seconds and then stop, When I opened the case I found that the Heat Sink and Fan had come away from the processor due to one of the small lugs breaking on the surround of the processor. Today I fitted another Heat Sink and Fan with different fixing clips so that I could use the remaining good lugs. The computer started and ran but the picture on the monitor screen was a series of multicoloured perpindicular lines. Can any one suggest why this is and offer any solution to correct the problem? The mohter board is an AL440LX and the processor is a 462 socket type.

what was your son doing? was he upgrading something, if so, what? this may be where the fault is.

however, it sounds like a monitor problem but it could be the graphics card.... do you have a spare monitor you could try? or a spafe graphics card?
Where the lines covering the screen or is there gaps where you can see the "normal" display?

Yes he was upgrading it. Prior to sending it back to me by the overnight it was working perfectly. It could be that when the heat sink and fan came away from the processor it was swinging around inside the computer and caused some other damage, for instance the graphics card. The perpindicular lines of colours, made up of small rectangles of colour cover the whole screen, with no gaps. I do not have a spare graphics card or monitor to try.

I would doubt a monitor problem unless the monitor was shipped?

Sounds like some internal injuries. Here is your mobo (fwiw):

You could try reseating the graphics card. If the main board was damaged I doubt that you would get any signal at all.

    Any beeps from the machine?
