Angry 30 mins to load windows!!

    Hi,

My first post folks and hopefully someone can help.

My laptop takes 30 mins to load windows! When I switch on, it displays a black screen with the usual system info.

It then goes totally black for a couple of minutes before showing a thick white lined progress bar across the bottom of the screen. This slowly completes itself until 30 mins later, windows xp is installed.

Any clues before my laptop goes out of the window?

    Thanks.

I had this problem on an old PC. Everytime I turned on the PC, the thick white line slowly progressed and then XP slowly started. I couldn't make sense of the problem, then at the end of the week, it would not boot at all and I had to reinstall Windows. The old problem returned straight away and at the end of the second week, Windows would not boot again. The problem was caused by a faulty hard drive. The hard drive was about 5 or 6 years old I believe and as soon as I purchased a new hard drive, the problem disappeared. Hope this helps to diagnose your problem.

    Owen,

Noted and thanks. Hopefully I won't need a new hard drive. Mind you if the laptop does go out of the window, that will be academic.

I would highly recommend making a backup of all your files that are important onto some kind of Optical Media like a DVD or CD, or another hard drive if you have a second hard drive fitted or a USB memory stick.
