Assuming that your XP is on C: then yes.
Type:
FIXMBR C:
then enter. After that completes type:
FIXBOOT C:
then enter. After that completes type:
BOOTCFG /rebuild
then enter. After that completes type:
EXIT
then reboot.
when i put in the last one "bootcfg /rebuild" it gave me
"Error: Failed to successfully scan disks for windows installation. This error may be caused by a corrupt file system, whice would prevent bootcfg from successfully scanning. Use "chkdsk" to delect any disk errors." should i run "chkdsk" and then run "bootcfg /rebuild" again
Yes.
ok it went through fine but asked "Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All):" what is this and what would i want to do
That was a search for your XP. Add to boot list? YES
i said yes then it said "Enter Load Identifier:"... what is that
Enter Load Identifier: XPThe bootcfg /rebuild command scans the hard disks of the computer for Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP installations, and then displays the results. You can add the detected Windows installations.
An example of the message that may be displayed:

Enter Operating System Load Options: (that is: /fastdetect)
[2] D:\Windows
