If you cannot access your Home version then there is probably nothing to be done with the existing partitions.
If you could get into Home you might be able to delete F: & try again.

That XP disk should be fine. Look at the CD itself to see if it says Upgrade. If not then you should be OK.

Read this guide for a Clean Install:

    http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

The XP CD should be able to handle the formatting. Choose NTFS for the file system & choose one single partition.

If this fails you can try the FDISK link from my last post which is a bootable floppy that will format/wipe your drive. Then XP should install.

The problem may reside in the OEM Home version trying to protect itself in some way.

In other words yes. Boot disk being similar to FDISK

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q255867/

The XP disk being booted should resolve the MBR.

When you run the fdisk and format commands, the Master Boot Record (MBR) and file allocation tables are created. The MBR and file allocation tables store the necessary disk geometry that allows hard disk to accept, store, and retrieve data.
Under normal circumstances the XP CD would take care of all of this.
