The cursed explorer.

    The cursed explorer.

I've recently downloaded an update from Microsoft and now windows explorer won't load up fully. Half way through loading programs (already at desktop), explorer would high-tail it and run away with all my memory. It takes up 99% of the CPU and refuses to load up any other programs. I can move my mouse fine but if I inch it over the taskbar, it turns to a busy signal. I decided to end the explorer.exe and everything turns okay again.

Except I have no task bar. If I do a recovery, then it still works, but I want to keep the updates. And the updates creates a problem. That is what I gather, but perhaps it is a known bug or something?

    Thanks,
    Kevin.

Do you know the specific update?

There was a reported issue with:

    Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-051
Vulnerabilities in MSDTC and COM+ Could Allow Remote Code Execution (902400)
    Published: October 11, 2005 | Updated: October 14, 2005

I am not sure, but I will download the patch update for windows xp.

Just wanted to point out that even restoring does not work once I reboot. It works fine after one restore, but after rebooting again it does not work.

I will post results in a little while, thanks.

edit: The patch update did not seem to work and I'm still left with explorer on the fritz

I am not entirely sure that the update is responsible for this, but the problem did coincide with my downloading of the update...

If you have a full version XP CD run sfc /scannow.

Click start; then run; then type sfc /scannow

Note the space between sfc & /scannow. You will be asked to insert your CD. This will replace any corrupt or missing files including explorer.exe

If XP was pre-installed (OEM) you will need to consult your manual for recovery options.
