Most likely your file WINMM.dll has become corrupted and needs to be replaced.

If you have a full version XP CD you can insert it & hold the shift key down for a minute to keep the CD from auto-starting; or if it starts just choose EXIT.

Then from start/run type in sfc /scannow (note the space after sfc).
This will replace any damaged system files.

Or you can use the disk by choosing Browse this CD & locate WINMM.dll & copy to C:\WINDOWS\system32\

Or you can try the download here:

what exactly is that disk and if i don't have it what was the second option??? or am i just better off using my sys. recovery disks and wiping my computer and starting over????
If you have Recovery Disks then XP was probably pre-installed on your computer?

One file is not worth starting over I hope

    Try the download:

    http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?winmm

Save the .zip file to your desktop. Right click it & choose Open With or Extract & the XP wizard shoud extract the .exe to your desktop. Then double click the .exe & follow any further instructions.

Let us know if you have any problems

    You click:

Click here to go to the download of winmm.dll

    Then another window should open.

(You need Javascript and Pop up windows enabled to continue).

Do you have Java? Do you have a pop-up blocker?
