Only take Windows Updates from the Windows Updates site via your All Programs | Windows Update.

I prefer to set my setting in the SP2 Security Center (also accessible via the Control Panel) at: "Your computer is set to receive notifications when new updates are available."

Generally the 2nd Tuesday of every month.

Updates listed there as Critical should be installed.
