    Weird XP problem

Lol I need help with this one. Looking at a friends computer, multiple problems. The main one currenty being directx errors and display errors.
I downloaded the driver for the display and it sets up fine, yellow exclamation mark in device manager goes. As soon as i try to reinstall a game with dirextx 8.1 it errors the display driver again, yellow exclamation back stating error code 10. The game throws an error 'directx error no devices/modes enumerated, error 2010'.
    Any ideas?

Error 10 This device cannot start. (Code 10) Device failed to start. Click Update Driver to update the drivers for this device.
On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooting wizard.
I can find no link to the DirectX 2010 error.

I see this graphics chipset SiS 315 as both on a card as well as onboard.

Do you know which it is in this case?

    What driver are you installing?

Seeing the RAM spec (System Memory 224 MB (DDR SDRAM)) I would assume an onboard chip sharing the 256 MB RAM.

That would equate to a graphics RAM of 32 MB. If the game you are installing requires more than this perhaps it is tripping the driver?

Have you checked start/run dxdiag | Display ?

Also what is the version of directX? Perhaps the 9.0c might help:

    What does Belarc show for:

    1. System Model
    2. Main Circuit Board
    3. Display

The game is very small, will run on 95/98 etc and only requires 4mb ram. I'm using Aida32 for the system specs etc. It says
    Display:
    Video Adapter SiS 315
    3D Accelerator SiS 315

    Motherboard Properties:
    Motherboard ID 62-P140-001368-00101111-040201-SiS650G$GPRO1140G/GV PRO BIOS
    Motherboard Name Unknown

As far as system model, its a Hyundai comp, bitza (bitza this and that)

Update on the directx error, it says its a fatal engine error E2010.

Searching SiS 315 brings up multiple results from onboard chips to AGP cards.

From the RAM data I would think that you are dealing with an onboard chip.

But it would be important to confirm that. Is it onboard or an AGP card?

The drivers for that chip would be best found from the motherboard or the computer or the card manufacturer respectively.

I would try Belarc to ID the board & if that fails open the case & look for cards & or board labels.

    dxdiag might also be informative.

If DirectX 9.0c is not installed that also might be a worthwhile upgrade.

Thanks Jephree, I'll open it up tonight and have a look at whats in there. Will run Belarc and dxdiag on it tomorrow. Machine is out of warranty, modem doesnt work even though it says device working properly. When you right click the desktop none of the tabs for the display are visible.
Games were working until it went in under warranty for ram failure, they havent worked since.
Poor woman got well and truly ripped off as far as the warranty went. She asked if I'd look at it, see if i could get it working properly for the kids games otherwise she'll save up for a new one.

Use Aida/Everest to scan the RAM for ID. Motherboard | SPD

If there are multiple sticks there might be a compatibility issue. Check the details for the manufacturer & type of RAM. Troubleshoot by removing individual sticks.

    Also RAM test: http://www.memtest86.com/

    As to display perhaps:

line 285 right column and download & run the "Restore All Display Tabs"

Ok ran dxdiag and it came up with missing d3dim700.dll. Am reinstalling directx9 as it came with sp2. So that missing file as well as these games trying to install directx 8.1 would be a problem.
Grrr its still missing that file, will copy it from the i386 folder and see if that fixes it.
It also says the generic drivers are being used for this onboard video (i had the box open) but onboard was too hard to read.
Directdraw tests fine but direct3d wont because of the generic drivers.
Dxdiag lists the display as unknown.

I found the board (I think) ASRock GV PRO

    http://www.asrock.com/Drivers/Manual...Pro_UM_v11.pdf

Unfortunately I cannot find any listings for drivers from the ASRock site. They don't even have the board in legacy anymore.

Did you try a SiS 315 driver?

lol yes I tried the sis315 driver, it wasnt happy with it. Its listed in the device manager now (letting windows auto detect) as Sis 650_651_M650_M652_740. Will have a look for that and try it.
Resolved the directx error by copying the missing dll from my comp to it. Some games will run now, others wont because of the driver issue I think.
Next problem is the create new dialup internet connection is greyed out (and dial up broadband). Tried the regfix from Kelly's korner, didnt work. Tried this from MS (option 1 only)http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;320558, didnt work.
