As I know you are a capable searcher I hate just throwing links at you

All things considered: what about a repair install of XP?

Thanks for the help Jephree. I will try installing the Q329441 critical update for internet connection problem tomorrow when I drag it out and fire it up again. Stubborn thing it is but not as stubborn as me lol.
The recovery cd was never returned with the comp after the warranty claim. When she rang they denied ever having the cd! So recovery isnt an option.
Am downloading the 650_222_win2kxp driver from Sis which supports SiS650GL, SiS740, SiS650GX, SiSM650, SiS651, SiS650 so that ought to cover it. Hopefully.

One win, the sis driver is the right one, yay.

I give up on the dial up problem though. I have applied every regedit found on the net and still nothing. Grrrrr.

Ms just redirects me to the same fixes I've already tried. Without the recovery cd i think its impossible to fix. She may have to see if MS would send her out a replacement cd if she supplies them with all her licencing details?

The recovery CD would have been supplied by the manufacturer.

What is the make & model?

Most manufacturers will sell their recovery CD's.

The CD's have no clue as to licensing. With a full version XP you brand your hard drive with your Product Key that you type in during install.

With an OEM the manufacturer would have had a batch key. I am uncertain how this key is used with recovery disks. I would guess that either the recovery disk for a particular model recognises that model & visa versa or there may be a Product Key on the XP label of the computer.

Just an update. I got in touch with the warranty people for this woman and basically threatened legal action if the recovery disk wasnt found for it.
Got a phone call 2 hours later and they actually found the oem cd for the machine, it was in her file????
So I can now try a repair install on this thing. I've done all the reading etc but just wanted to ask if anyone has extra tips on this procedure. I will backup the registry(not that its in good shape), uninstall sp2, copy all her documents and pics etc, write down the cd ID number and key. Anything else?

Recovery CD's are usually specific to the manufacturer. They might have some info on their web site.

Usually there is an option of Destructive or Non-Destructive. The Non is the equivalent of an XP Repair as it will save all programs & settings. The Destructive is the equivalent of a Clean Install and will return the machine to factory settings; removing any added programs; files; etc.

All Windows updates will be removed and need to be reinstalled. I prefer to have SP2 on disk so that you do not need to go on-line to get it. You can download it here and burn to CD:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

If you install XP pre SP1 you may need to make this regedit to get on-line:
    Locate the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\RasMan\PPP\EAP

Delete the following registry keys under the EAP subkey:
    25
    26

Quit Registry Editor, and then restart your computer.
This issue was resolved with SP1.

I think the best overall guide to install/reinstalling XP is this:

Thanks Jephree, its not a recovery cd, its the original Windows XP OEM cd, maks it easier. lol. Will regedit 25 and 26 out of there, already been trying that on hers. Funny those 2 entries are in my system and never had a problem with them. Mine was a pre SP1 install, go figure.
Will go he a read on michaelstevens, thanks again mate.

I don't fully understand the RASMAN issue. After installing SP1 or 2 then 25 & 26 are back but apparently if they are there before SP1 or 2 there is an issue.
    Microsoft has this page:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;329441

    Also just found this tip:
An OEM recovery CD (which is what this sounds like) should put the
system back in its original ex-factory state. If that needed activation
in the first instance (some don't) it will be needed again. And modem
settings will have gone back to default so your connection through it
will need setting up again in Network connections

You might want to have that display driver on hand as well.

Semi resolved. Have got the dial up back and tabs on the display. Did an in place reinstall of XP. She hasnt got mobo drivers or anything so I thought it would be better than a fresh install.
Now to sort out the graphics. The sis driver is the latest one but as soon as I test some of the kids game cd's the display goes back to 640x480 and stays there. Grrrr.
Have downloaded the agp controller from here and will test tomorrow. http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/sisagp.html
If that doesnt work I'll suggest she get a decent card like Nvidia.
