The free Anti-Virus most used is AVG:

Most Firewall manufacturers offer a free version (although navigating their site to freedom is often quite twisted).
Each has unique interfaces and configuration details but they basically all do the same job.
It's pretty much a matter of taste.

The advantage of these free walls over the XP SP2 wall is that they cover in and out bound signals whereas the XP only monitors inbound. When using a 3rd party wall you should turn off the XP wall.

Using Autoruns check/uncheck rather than deleting will allow you to experiment and make changes/restore etc.

The main entry that I see for the firewall is:

    C:\Program Files\Norton Personal Firewall\ISSVC.exe

Unless you are on a network you can remove this:

ccproxy.exe is a part of the Symantec Internet Security Suite. This process allows you to setup basic Internet sharing, which allows you to share your Internet connection across your home or office.

The rest of these appear to be what is required:

ccsetmgr.exe is a process associated with the Symantec Internet Security Suite and is essential to it's functioning.

ISSVC.exe is a part of Norton Internet Security Suite and is a vital process for informing you about the latest Internet-bound security threats.

SNDSrvc.exe is a process associated with the Norton Antivirus from Symantec.

SPBBCSvc.exe is a part of the Symantec Internet security suite and assists in keeping your computer upto date from Internet bound viruses.

ccevtmgr.exe is a part of the Norton Internet Security Suite. This process acts as a logger for the AntiVirus and firewall application installed.

navapsvc.exe is a part of the Norton AntiVirus application. It is running in the background and provides auto-protection features to the system.

npfmntor.exe is a process belonging to the Norton Antivirus Internet security suite, and helps your computer achieve real-time antivirus protection by checking files.

Symlcsvc.exe is an application which belongs to Norton's Internet Security Suite, and provides additional security features.

ccapp.exe is a process belonging to Norton AntiVirus. It is responsible for the auto-protect and email checking facilities, both of which will not function correctly if this service is stopped.
