Well I will cut to the point...

When I log on the background appears but nothing else. I do ctrl + Alt + Del to see what processes are running and there are only 18 unlikt the normal 28. I then proceed to log off through Ctrl Alt Del, but nothing happens, it just stops Task manager from opening up again. This happens a lot, but then it will just stop for a while, then it is back.

Does anyone know of any fixes, and if so help would be greatly appreciated.

Is this just one user or all users? Did this just start to happen? Does Ctrl + Esc bring up the Start Menu?

If the issue is explorer.exe not working this is suggested:

Go to Start/Run and type in CMD:
expand x:\i386\explorer.ex_ c:\windows\explorer.exe


Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar (Line 195)

Note: Do not reboot or logoff. Once the edit is merged, right click the
Notification Area/Task Manager/Processes. Highlight Explorer.exe, End
Process.


Leave the Task Manager open. Once the process has ended, choose File/New
Task and type in: Explorer.exe.

If the above doesn't work and you have a full version XP CD try to run sfc /scannow from the Run box.

Will this be a permanent fix, or will I need to do the Cmd command everytime i want to log on?
