I'm having this problem and I have SBC DSL. Where can you download the fix from their website?

I bought a laptop on Sunday, had this problem, replaced it on Monday, same problem.

I phoned SBC's tech support line, they assured me the problem is not caused by the installation disk and that it should be compatible with all Windows OS. The plot thickens and becomes ever more depressing.

You have had this problem on 2 different brand new computers?

Did the computer work before installing SBC?

    Have you tried this:

Restore Taskbar and Desktop to Default Functionality (Line 164)

Funny, they were the ones who told me that the disk could cause exactly the problems that myself and you are having, so I did a go-back, and installed the first part, and went to the links that they gave me to download the rest,to get these I told them that when I got to the second part of the download, that I could not connect to their server to finish, and that is when the gentleman told me that-that was a good thing, because, (and he told me without me even mentioning it) I just figured it was a bug in the new computer, so if they come back without the program in there, I would say that is the problem. If you have the option to do so, a go-back might be all you need; because they sent me the wrong equipment, the first installation was the speed stream I believe, that caused all the trouble, the 2wire when I recieved it, well there was a big long code that they forgot to provide, and these numbers won't work for installing the 2 wire (that's another issue), anyways, they gave this to me to finish the download, and some others that I am frantically looking for, because to sort it all out, took 4 days, this is the address I used--204.60.203.227/register-----will keep checking back, as I am extremely curious (sorry for the long wind) LoL

Checked out the number, and it took me to an interesting page that might be different to me because I am installed, but you will definitely find something here that is in reference to the manual registration without the Cd.

Are you using XP Pro? On my last laptop it was XP Home and I never had this problem. What do you mean by a go-back? Uninstall DSL and start again?

It's Visual IPInsight for me, coolpro2 at www.theeldergeek.com forum suggested removing it and it worked. It's a program installed during SBC installation.

Boot to safe mode, go to control panel and add/remove programs. Remove Visual IPInsight, and reboot in normal mode. Mine works now. I'm going to drink a beer.

Can we make this a sticky? I've seen a lot of people are having this desktop icons disappearing problem.

Thanks for the update & info & glad you got it sorted.

The disappearing desktop/taskbar has many roots & a wide range of fixes.

Many viruses; trojans; & malware attack this interface.

Knowing the SBC link gives us all another 1st question to ask.

    Thanks again for the input!

Let us know if we can help further in the future!
