    Windows XP Home installation issue

Heya all, figured I might drop a note and see if anyone has had a similar issue, and a possible solution for my latest headache.

I am building a computer, with the new prescott core processor, a P4 2.4a with 1024kb L2 cache, and because of this, I am having to use a new chipset motherboard, this one being a Asus p4s800-mx with a sis chipset.

When still in text mode setup for windows xp home, if I boot the unit from the cd-rom, and with a blank 120GB hard drive, can get all of the way to the unit formatting the hard drive(in NTFS), and it will proceed about 60-70% of the way through the format, and then drop to a screen that says it cannot complete the format and to check the hard drive.

If I used a 98 boot disk, fdisk, and format the drive in fat32, and then run setup from the cd-rom after booting to a dos prompt, setup will go past that point, to where its still in text mode setup and copying files. It will stop on drwatson.exe and say that there's a problem with the cd-rom drive or disk, etc and your options are to skip the file, or exit.

Now I know this isn't a bad HD, MB, CPU, or Windows XP disk (I have 2 of everything)... it feels a lot like the compatability problems NT and 2k had when installing those on newer hardware, but am looking for a little advice.

Anyone have any experience using the new prescott core processors, and installing windows xp onto non intel chipsets?

    Thanks in advance!

When formating your HDD, what does your error message says EXACTLY?

Tell me how you built and installed your PC?

Before formating or installing XP Home edi, did you properly make your partition set to active? Did you ensure that your HDD supports large partition

it will proceed about 60-70% of the way through the format, and then drop to a screen that says it cannot complete the format and to check the hard drive.
...try using your friend's XP Home edi CD if they have it and install it again.
