This can be caused by backweb, an installed utility with Compaq computers to check for updates from them.
You can try to disable Backweb from loading in msconfig.

IF you don't have backweb, see if there are any entries for Compaq Connections in msconfig. If so, disable To get it to stop appearing at startup uncheck 'Compaq Connections' in MsConfig startup that should stop the error message.

Also try a scan with "AdAware SE " see if it shows the backweb application which was listed as a possibly undesireable application.

HP knows about this problem. It is not necessary to have this executable start up on boot. You can disable it in the startup. Click on Start> Run> type in msconfig> hit OK - this takes you to the System Configuration utility. Click on the startup tab and find the "Updates from HP" and click on the tick on the LHS to disable it. This leaves your system in a 'Selective startup state' To remove it completely edit the registry. IMPORTANT - Back up the registry first. Then search the registry for "UPDATE~1.exe -startup", and delete the key. If you get a WIN services error on re-boot, just re-boot again and it should go away. Good luck!

I had the same problem with my "HP Pavilion a810n" and "Updates from HP.exe". In my case a recent scan with "Spybot - Search & Destroy" showed up the backweb application which was listed as a possibly undesireable application. I removed it and this message started on startup. I used Spybot to restore it and the message stopped.

I suspect that"Updates from HP.exe" uses backweb libraries and removal created a problem for it.

I wonder if you used any utilities that removed registry entries or binaries related to "backweb" ? Restoring them may allow you to continue to run "Updates from HP.exe" without this error.

To solve the issue, we have to remove few items from the startup that are not necessary. Please follow these steps to remove unnecessary items: We are not deleting any programs we are simply stopping them from running on start up. Make sure you uncheck all that are not listed and click apply. Note: if some of the programs are missing under start up tab, then please ignore and proceed with the steps.

    1. Click Start and then Run | 2. In the Run box, type msconfig, and click OK | 3. Click Startup tab and uncheck all the programs except: RUNDLL32 RECGUARD Hkcmd PS2 KBD Igfxtray PCH Button HP Center UI HP Center Hpsysdrv Any entry that starts with the letter 'n' and 'cc' (if you have Norton) Any entry that starts with 'm' (if you have McAfee) Any entry related to Internet Service Provider. | 4. Click OK and then restart the system.

When the computer restarts it will popup a message that you are using selective startup, put a mark in the box next to "Don't show this again" and click OK. Selective Startup will also increase the speed of the computer startup.
