    PC will not load up

My son's pc will not start up. When you turn it on, it makes a few bleeps (different to the usual) and then the monitor goes into standby and nothing else happens.

I've tried booting from floppy, changing graphics card, swapping monitors, but no luck.

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

What is the exact make & model of the computer? Is it old?

If we know the make/model we can look up the specific beep code that matches the BIOS.

If it is not the graphics card the next suspect would be RAM or the CPU itself. Possibly the power supply.

Did this just happen all of a sudden? Were things OK before?

Some parts of the pc have been replaced or upgraded, the motherboard included. I not sure what make it was, but definitely not alot older than a year.

My son said that the pc had frozen a couple of times before it went, he tried cntl, alt, del but had to reset it.

If you go HERE download the advisor, that'll tell you a bit about your motherboard etc and will help us a lot to diagnosing your problem.

As you can see here different beeps mean different things.

    Thanks.

The one long beep followed by two short ones says "Video (Mono/CGA Display Circuitry) issue". Although I had already tried it, I put an old graphics card back in again and this time I have been able to load windows. However, it's still not perfect. The pc now keeps restarting and I get an error message saying "General extraction error Location ES1".

    Any ideas welcome!

Had you installed any new programmes before this started to happen?

Was XP installed on the new motherboard?

Also change this setting in order to get detailed error messages:

rt. click My Computer then click Properties then Advanced then Startup and Recovery Settings then unclick Automatically restart
