Screen resolution stuck at 640 × 480!
My screen resolution is stuck at 640 × 480. I've tried everything I can think of to make it bigger, and it's all failed. I did a diags test and all that stuff, and it doesn't seem to find anything wrong.
One thing I've noticed though is my computer doesn't seem to find my monitor (see the test results below). There are no installation CDs for this monitor. Please help. What do I do to fix this?
Here's a scan I did. Hopefully it serves some purpose...

Did this just happen? Were things working OK before? Any changes? New Hardware/ Software?
What is the exact Dell model?
Look in the Device Manager:
Start/Run/ devmgmt.msc
Under Monitor. Is that listed as working oK?
-
Sorry for not being more specific, perhaps I should have been. I've got a Dell Dimension 2400. I did as you said, it doesn't even have a monitor option listed. It's like my computer has no idea there's a monitor hooked to it.
And another thing that I had not mentioned before:
I just crashed my system a few weeks ago and cleaned it out. I totally started out fresh. I've looked up this problem a few times, and I see things about video cards, drivers, diags, etc. I've gone into DOS mode and ran a few tests; nothing was found to be wrong.
Now, when I crashed my computer, I installed all of the necessary CDs and stuff. My screen resolution and colors were working fine before I crashed it, so obviously something went missing when I did this. I'm assuming it's got something to do with the diags, but I don't see how resetting and wiping out the system would do anythere there. I thought that was all already done.
-
Under dxdiag:
Start/Run/ dxdiag | Display
What is the listed device?
For reference here is Dell Dimension 2400:
http://support.dell.com/support/trou...=19&l=en&s=dhs
They do have a Diagnostic utility as well as Video drivers but you need to ID your device.
-
Okay, I got this under device:
Name:
Manufacturer:
Chip Type:
DAC Type:
Approx. Total Memory: n/a
Current Display Mode: 640 × 480 (16 bit) (1hz)
Monitor:
Once again, it looks like it can't find a monitor. I'll check that link out. Hopefully it'll help.
-
Have you added a graphics card or are you using the Dell as it was originally setup?
It is not so much your monitor that is not being detected as it is your video/graphics card/chip is not being detected.
You might try the diagnostic Utility or else try the Video drivers.
Did you reload XP with the Dell XP disk?
-
Yep. I'm using the Dell as is was originally setup. I also reloaded XP with the correct Dell XP disk that came with the computer.
I'll try some of these downloads and updates, then post results.
-
This is tougher than I thought, I have no idea where to put all these files...where do diags go?!
-
I am not sure what you are trying to download.
This perhaps would be the easiest to start with:
http://pccheckup.dellfix.com/rel/?ra...62832412517776
Or: Dell 32 Bit Diagnostics (Graphical User Interface version)(floppy disk)
http://support.dell.com/support/down...76924&vercnt=3
Or perhaps just go for this driver: Intel 845 G/GL Integrated Video
http://support.dell.com/support/down...&fileid=113231
Hard Drive Installation (via WinZip) with Setup.exe File for R86399.EXE
Download
1.Click Download Now, to download the file.
2.When the File Download window appears, click Save (Windows XP
users will click Save) this program to disk and click OK. The Save In:
window appears.
3.From the Save In: field, click the down arrow then click to
select Desktop and click Save. The file will download to your desktop.
4.If the Download Complete window appears, click Close. The file
icon appears on your desktop.
Install
1.Double-click the new icon on the desktop labeled R86399.EXE.
2.The Self-Extracting window appears and prompts you to extract or
unzip to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\r86399. Write down this path so the executable (I.e.
Setup.exe) file can be found later.
3.The Self-Extractor window appears.
4.Click OK.
5.After completing the file extraction, if the Self-Extractor
window is still open, close it.
6.Click the Start button and then click Run.
7.Type C:\DELL\DRIVERS\r86399 in the Open textbox and then click OK.
8.Follow the on-screen installation instructions.

Wow! I was doing something totally wrong, but it's fixed now. Thanks a lot! Now I don't have to buy a whole new computer.
Your help is REALLY appreciated.
