    Computer lock up with windows xp

    My computer randomly freezes and I have tried formating and reinstalling Windows XP which didn't stop the crashes. The system just locks up with out warning or blue screens. The event viewer shows a couple of errors when this happens. The first one is "The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing.". And the second one is The machine-default permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID". Any help would be great.

    My system specs.
    Windows XP home SP2 with most current updates
    Norton Antivirus 2003
    Nvidia Nforce firewall
    AMD 64 3000 Socket 939
    Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
    2 sticks of 512mb kingston ram running in Dual DDR mode
    2 80 gig maxtor hard drives
    Enermax 520watts of power

    Thanks,
    Paul D.

    Sounds like a hardware problem... Was this machine working OK previously?

    Any changes? Can you find the source of those error messages? Such as:

    The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was C0000005 from line 44 of d:\pxp_slp\com\com1x\src\events\tier\eventsystemob j.cpp. Please contact microsoft product support services to report this error.

    Also:

    Go to start | search (type in) .dmp
    Note the location of your latest .dmp file.

    Then:

    1) Download and install the
    Debugging Tools from Microsoft
    2) Download and install this
    debugwiz
    3) Open the Wiz & Browse to, or paste in the path to, your latest .dmp file.
    4) After the Wiz creates a Text document attach it back to this thread.

    I searched for any *.dmp files and couldn't find any. The complete errors messages that show up in the system and aplication viewers are as follows:

    {The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was C0000005 from line 44 of d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemo bj.cpp. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services to report this error.}

    {The machine-default permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
    {BC866CF2-5486-41F7-B46B-9AA49CF3EBB1}
    to the user NT AUTHORITY\LOCAL SERVICE SID (S-1-5-19). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.)

    My system worked pretty good before. I did read in an old Maximum PC issue that said they did have some instability problems with the ASUS A8N-SLI motherboard. The only errors or problems I've run into is a "Low Virtual Memory" message. That only happened a few times before while I was either playing a graphic intense game while downloading or while converting mpegs/avi to dvd format. This makes me think that it could be a faulty stick of ram or a problem with running my memory in dual ddr mode. I ran Sandra and received good bench marks from it but it stated in the cpu section that

    Warning 235 : Vcore less than rated minimum. Check Vcore setting!

    I hope that gives you a little bit more info.

    Thanks for the swift reply,

    Paul D.

    Seems to be something with the built in NIC. Computer freezes up with P2P programs (torrents and limewire) and when my other computer is connected through my D-link DSL-604+ modem/router. Re-installed drivers with great difficulty. For some reason the computer had a had time with loading them. Lots of freeze ups. Tried the new bios updates with no luck. Thanks for the help. Here are some new event log errors.

    The Apache service named reported the following error:
    >>> apache.exe: could not open document config file C:/Program Files/NVIDIA Corporation/NetworkAccessManager/Apache Group/Apache2/conf/httpd.conf .

    Errors 2 & 3 reflect your earlier post.

    The Apache/ Nvidia is new. I am not sure what the Apache program is being used for?

    I do note you using Nvidia Nforce firewall. I wonder about conflicts here? Or with SP2?

    What drivers were difficult to install?

    For troubleshooting I would recommend simplifying as much as possible.
    e.g. remove from network.

    By trying the new BIOS "with no luck" do you mean that you could not update? Or the update made no difference?

    Also you might want to try running a HijackThis log (especially since using torrents and limewire):

    Please follow the instructions HERE & then post your log in a new thread in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs section.
    (Not in this section please).
