Re: search results (won't close)
They did not say which fan, and that was the only time it did that on a floppy, because, I have tried several times to get it to do it again-hoping LoL...
Please believe that I will pay very close attention, and ask questions, because if they come out, I want them to find this issue if possible, so i figure to get them to do several re-starts, and hope it does it at least once....
Still sounds like it's coming from the front, didn't do it when I had the hood open, and I do not like to leave it open too long, because we have a cat, who likes to be nosy, and don't want fur in there LoL.....

Well, they think it is the hard drive, although it would not make the noise while the tech was here, but after he left though LoL
God thing, I have figured out how to make it do it, although it is the same sound, it does not sound as urgent, but is definitely coming from the hard drive, checked with the cover off, it seems to be getting stuck in a diagnostic mode for the hard drive, when it starts up some times;
He told me to keep running checks, and what to tell dell to get them to fix it, and when I was doing number 7 (ide diag.) from the f-12 menu, that is when it started, but even after it run its course (noise and all) it still said pass, but the general concensus, is to replace it, as it may or may not last, and I would sincerely appreciate your opinion.
They replace it monday, and I am backing up the drive using norton ghost, and I must say, that I really can not figure it out, but have seemed to figure out a more manual approach (what ever works-Huh), and I have read extensively, including the radified documentaion that is recommende almost every where I went-link below
http://ghost.radified.com/ They have alot of interesting stuff there..
Think I am going to do that dell system restore, and see what it does, and also try restoring some files, see if the way I done it works, tried deleting files already and restoring them, and it worked, just can not figure out an easy way to do it, as suggested.
Will keep checking back.

Quick question--how to make and restore a registry backup on Xp (I know it is alot different than 98Se) LoL
Won't do me much good to restore the programs if I can'tn update registry......Thank You
Blessings
-
The 2 basic ways:
1. from start | run type regedit
Then click File then Export
Send it to My Documents (or wherever).
2. from All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Backup
open the Backup Wizard & choose Only back up the System State data i.e. the registry.
This backup program is installed with XP Pro only. To use in Home you need to follow the following:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u..._03july14.mspx
You cannot backup directly to CD but after backing up to your hard drive you can then burn the backup to a CD.

If you are going to use another Seagate hard drive you can use their software to copy/clone the drive:

Bless You Sir, did all of these things, was all over that seagate site, and did not see that, as that was what I was looking for, I always say "that you can not have too many backups" (got caught short once & cd's aren't that expensive) live & learn, and have been trying the ones I have and they seem to be working, as I hope it does after I wipe it clean LoL
Practice a little with the old hard drive, and be kind to the new one, because this one will some times load before the music stops playing, and other days way after ???and of course "the squeal", and if it does it again, at least it should not be the hard drive, but after checking as you suggested, the noise was indeed coming from the C:/ drive, I just can not express enough GRATITUDE for your SINCERE efforts in helping people with their issues here, it is just AWESOME, but don't count me out, I will be back LoL (no doubt in my mind), and again KUDOS for saving me time by helping me with the diagnostics (figure it would have lasted till the warranty ran out LoL).
Did some extensive burning with sonic software, and all seemed well, except it seems to take a breather in the middle of each Cd, since I am new to that, and as long as it works, I can only guess that this is normal LoL.
Ok, off to try the real test, and see what that dell factory restore really does-curious where it takes it to, and if all that junk will be there, might even try (if time permits-still have a job LoL) the dell doctored O/S cd, as Dan says they are very different (may want a real Xp Cd).

Just a quick reply on play time, had forgot all the original issues-search results won't close, 20 min. shutdowns, programs not responding or opening, end programs not working, etc. LoL , not going to worry about any of that stuff till they replace hard drive tomorrow..
Trying To try everything possible in a short time to see how it all works, too much to try though LoL.
Am a little concerned though, all the backups seem to work for a little while, then things just stop workinng, and when I re-boot, I get an impossible blue screen to get passed, not matter what I tried, even disaster recovery--it says windows has been stopped from loading to protect the system from damage, with a list of things to do, which can't all be done, even with a disaster recovery Cd LoL..
Backup methods used were microsoft (didn't like that at all), and norton ghost, which lasted a little while, then...............blue screen on boot LoL.
Seems to be when I add the reg. enties for the programs that were restored, which of course will not run without-tried LoL.
Also the seagate tools would not work on a dell format, stating that it was a non-standard format-go figure-right, am I surprised LoL.
Just trying to learn what I can and post it here for future dell readers, and I believe that I am going to buy a second hard drive just for these learning processes, as you are most sincerely correct when you say that Xp can be hard headed, and difficult to get along with LoL

Quick question--I copied all of the windows installers to a Cd--They were there and now they are not, are they self destructing or something. LoL
very curious

Sorry: I am not sure that I follow what you are trying to save. Most installation files are temporary although they may leave a residue folder. Most programs try to cleanup after installation. There may be nothing in the folders you see.
Again sorry if I am over-simplifying but in essence if you are getting a new Seagate hard drive you (or Dell guy) should be able to CLONE your existing drive with this program:
http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/...s/discwiz.html
Best of luck for your Monday!

Found those installers, for some reason, they just were not being read, sometimes the run command only shows the last thing that was put on the Cd.
Did clone the drive-just having problems restoring, nothing that I really need anyways, except this came with a Cd burning program (sonic), and it is suppose to be on the dell Cd, funny thing though, tons of updates, but no program to install LoL (working on that one).
Did not really want all that other stuff, so I figured that I would play for free, just to learn about details of formatting and cloning.
Also found that most of the installers won't work unless there is an exe. to run them.
Thank You for your wishes, and you gave me another idea to try with the recovery Cd.

Well, got the new hard drive, and no noise, to this point..
They installed a pre-installed drive which, when turned on, it extracts all the info, from a compressed state, pretty cool, except, I think it makes the software a little buggy though LoL
My biggest one so far, is, that the dell musicmatch jukebox quit working during an update, and would not work at all after that, but that's not the real problem, windows media player quit with it-nothing.
Well, I tried to re-install WmP, and it says that this version of media player (10) is not compatible with my version of windows (Xp), I am at a loss on this..
Tried system restore, and it just keeps the bad program (Should have put GoBack in first-LoL),
so I tried cleaning out everything, and re-installing V-10, 9, 8, 7, etc., even tried re-installing MMJB, it works, but windows Mp still won't, didn't get a backup Cd for MMJB (dell version), so I downloaded the update manually, and it did a re-install (I guess) because the dell logo is gone, so it just comes with more adds (don't think I should need it), anyways, like I said, Wmp won't work, and the other music engines rely on it to work, MMJB is functional, but won't play without the Wmp, so I used RegSeeker to find all the entries for both, and cleaned out everything and tried again-same error..
Problem being- I can't update my license to play my music without Wmp, and any program that tries to play it, just shuts down (tried 'em all LoL)..
Suppose, I should have burned them all to a Cd, but I had no idea that windows would be in-compatible with windows LoL Looking for ideas--Thank You
