hi, i have just done a repair install on my computer and i get that message^^^ and STOP: 0x0000006b, the microsoft website wasnt much good, it said something about installing xp on a 2000 based system or something, i have done repair istalls in the past with no probs, i have tried doing another repair install, booting in safe mode, last known good config..... everything.
I also entered the recovery console and typed in "FIXBOOT" but that didnt work, will i have to do a clean install? i realy dont want to, i have just baught some music off napster and havnt backed it up

tried running chkdsk, it said it found 1 or more errors but didnt say it fixed them

i dont want to do a clean install on any hard drive that i have in now (i have things that i dont want to lose on both which is prety stupid)

chkdsk/f will fix what it finds although it will not point it out unless you watch the process on the screen.

Anyway as to the error:

Where are you at now? Can you boot into your old setup or are you locked into this Install issue?

Did the Repair Install complete or did it fail? When do you get this error? Are you able to by-pass it?

in recovery console, its chkdsk /p or chkdsk /r
i can get into the bios, i get the screen after the bootscreen, cant bypass it, tried safemode, last known good config... everything
the repair install completed and i got that error message (tried repair install again and that didnt work)

i am at my nans at the moment

it says on that site you gave me: This indicates that the Windows initialization failed.
but mine completed, it got to 100% then rebooted
should i unplug my slave drive and try again?
can i install xp on my slave drive (if set as master) without losing any data?

hi, just letting you know ive fixed it, i did a re-insatll of xp (it wasnt repair install and it wasnt clean install) i still have a few programs that work on my C: drive but some of them dont (e.g aol, nero etc, i had to re-install them)

because i re-installed xp (sp1) i no longer have sp2 installed, i tried to install from the disk and part way through, it said something like "the kernel used to start your computer is not a windows file......" and it won't carry on, also, i found it strange that it was extracting the files to D (my slave drive weras C is my os drive, however, it does not give me the option to install to c or change the instalation directory

What was it I didn't know there was another option. (Upgrade being synonymous with Repair).

Beyond that I don't know why your SP2 disk would behave that way.

Perhaps remove the slave drive as you suggested earlier & try again.

Another approach would be to create a slipstreamed XP SP2 CD. (Especially if you are reinstalling alot).

A good guide & free product here:

Basically you copy your XP CD & your SP2 CD to your hard drive & combine them with the program (which allows other customizations as well) & then create an ISO image that you can burn to a new CD.

so, baisicaly, it creates a windows xp sp2 cd? (or whatever service pack you use)

i created a windows xp sp 2 disk, (thanks for the link ) and did a clean install of xp, last time when i said about there-install (not clean install or repair install) i don't rememberfully what i did but i think the option i picked was to set up windows xp on the selected item press enter"
