today whilst on the internet i gat an warning from my virus protection saying that i had a "bloodhound.W32.EP" virus in one of my temporary internet files. Norton advised me it could not access the program and it never gave me any indication it had quarantined it etc. I simply deleted all my temporary internet files and then performed a virus scan. the result came back that the system was clean... is this all i had to do?

sounds like it, if your AV didnt find it, then it's clean and has been deleted
