Explorer and Windows error messages.
Hello,
Hopefully I've found a forum that will be able to help...!
On behalf of a pal whose computer, at first glance, seems really screwed... here's the problem...
Widows XP loads up fine. When they try to open Internet Explorer, they receive the message "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close... " and gives the option to send or not the error report. But then it can't send the error report because it can't open Explorer.
When they then try and go into My Computer to investigate, this error message appears: "Winows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close". The computer is then pretty dead and won't let him do anything; he just has to restart it. He's run F-Secure, but it isn't finding any viruses.
It sounds like a virus to me. Anyone ever heard of anything like this???
Hope so, and hopefully they'll know a fix too!
Any replies will be greatfully received.
Thanks!

Try going Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add/Remove Progarms(double click)
On the list under the Install/Uninstall Tab, find Internert Expolrer, click it, then the Add/Remove button.
You should get a window, choose Repair Internet Explorer.
I hope that works for you, if not uninstal IE and reinstall it.

thanks for the reply,
problem is, when they go to START, then control panel, the error message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem..." After the error message, the system appears to freeze. It doesn't seem that he can actually get into the computer to resolve the problem.
Any suggestions...?
cheers,

Can you boot into Safe Mode?
If you can try to RUN sfc /scannow
You will need an XP CD to do this.
