Streamlining Task Manager in Win XP SP2
Is there a windows for dummies method of fiquring out what I can delete from the task manager ? I have about 35 things listed and have no clue what 3/4 of them are.......Been having display "freez" issue for months.
ALSO...diagdx (?) says some damaged files are in log....how can I see that ?
Maybe this will help!

XP with default services & no programs running will have about 25 processes running.
Here is a list of what they are and what can be altered.

Where exactly in dxdiag are you seeing "damaged files in log"?

Hello Again, thanks for getting back to me !!
Did the major geeks thing based upon "safe" mode and now computer really choppy ? Noticed task manager now lists something called "OSA9.exe: process running that is eating like 99% of my CPU.
Pages really slow to change, mouse clicks slowed.......
Dxdiag reported under the "INPUT" tab that the registry contained errors and that a report had been saved.
WOW screen really deayed now even as I type.
HELP

osa9.exe is installed with Microsoft Office Suite.
http://startup.iamnotageek.com/srch-Osa9.exe.html
Depending on how much effort that you want to expend on services you can try resetting one by one in order to notice the affect.
Dxdiag Input! Again your mouse & or keyboard!
I am not sure where that log would be. Any info if you right click the entry?
Have you been monitoring your other logs? Event Viewer? Dumps?

Already discovered osa9.exe as part of Microsoft Office Suite.
Stopped it in Task Manager and worked...will it auto start agin everytime I bootup?
Dxdiag Input does not identify mouse or keyboard.
Right click the entry about logged errors in registry does nothing.
Been monitoring other logs: Event Viewer shows nothing new.
How do I monitor Dumps?
Question: could CPU be failing? temp checked at 147F.
Also: do video cards die slow or all at once. Problem involves any game now...when video card called upon.
THANKS

Start > Run > msconfig | Startup
You should find osa9.exe there. You can uncheck it.
& or you can use this little free app.:
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
It also has a registry cleaner that would allow you to check errors.
Another thing that you can do for registry problems is to run check disk:
start > run > cmd
in the new window type chkdsk/f
when prompted to run on boot choose Y & reboot
this will check for & fix any disk errors.
Dxdiag Input section is the section dedicated to input devices: mouse; keyboard; gamepad; etc.
You could try a search from start > search for dxdiag log.txt or somesuch. (Perhaps just dxdiag.txt).
64C/147F is quite hot but not neccessarily critical. What type of processor is it?
What about going back to that shop & exploring the keyboard issue again?
Also they might have another graphics card you could try out.
I doubt that there would be a slow dying process unless the card itself is having heat issues.
The dump log idea was just to check if any new ones had been created. Start > Search | .dmp
