If the Hardware Wizard is asking for the disk then it needs something on the disk.

If we know the make & model of the computer we can look up any ideas that they may have.
If XP was pre-installed (OEM) then it depends on the manufacturer on how to work with the OS.

By make & model we need something like Dell Dimension 1234 ... etc. (for example).

    PACKARD BELL
    UTIILIITIIES
Your Packard Bell computer contains tools that make resolving your computing
issues quick and easy. The following utility programs may be available to you to
guide you through the steps you will need to identify and correct problems you
    may encounter:
Packard Bell Snapsys - To monitor device drivers changes and maintain your
    computer.
Packard Bell SmartRestore - To reinstall software and hardware drivers provided
    by Packard Bell.

Packard Bell Recovery Program - To restore your entire computer to its original
    configuration.
Packard Bell MasterCD Creator - To transfer your computer's recovery data to CDs.
Although the Packard Bell site is very vague this computer circa 2000 was probably not originally shipped with XP.

Did you buy it new? Do you know if it was upgraded? If the Packard Bell Utilities do not resolve this issue you may need to borrow an XP disk.
