PC Reboot problems on XP...
Ok I will make this as simple as possible... For the past years my PC was working fine... but then suddenly just a couple of weeks ago when I on my PC it started to restart automatically, then after a few restart it would become OK again and stay stable. Then on a different day when I on my PC suddenly a Dialog box appears that says a system file terminated unexpected... and gives me one minute to shut down, this happens several times then suddenly after 9-10 times of restart my PC becomes OK again... I’m on Windows XP SP2, @ 1st I thought it might be a virus so I scanned my PC with different online virus scan but they could not find any thing, I have AVG as my virus scan, then I tried to format my PC, but after every format, same problem happens, my PC restarts for several times before it becomes stable... I’ve read on a different post about un-checking the auto reboot and I’ve done that, I’ve also gone to the computer management section of my computer to look @ the errors and it is a long list... has any one faced this problem, or does any know what the problem really is, and on how can I solve it...? thanks for any help...

Really need to get exact error messages.
The one minute shutdown is generally associated with the Sasser & or Blaster worm.
Try this scan: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
See if you can find one set of errors in the event viewer that coincide with a boot.
Note the date & time. Most likely the errors are just repeating.
Also when you say you format: do you mean that you totally reinstalled XP?
When you say "restart" does it actually boot into XP or does it restart before that?
Also try to run check disk:
start > run > cmd
in the new window type chkdsk/f
when prompted to run on boot choose Y & reboot
this will check for & fix any disk errors.

Yes I've format my Drive C and then reinstalled XP, the reboot problems are different, some times before it boots to windows it reboots right away, while some times after logging into windows... i have also tried the stinger but, nothing...

Did you try check disk?
Did you apply SP2 immeadiatly after re-installing XP or do you have an XP SP2 disk?
Is this machine on a network?
Also do you know the make of the hard drive? If not Belarc will tell you:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
Then search for & run your hard drive diagnostic:
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
I would also check your startup items. There maybe some combination conflicting there:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q310560
Also please post any fresh errors.

I have XP SP2 Disc, and yes, my PC is on a Network, but after I have formatted it, I disconnected the network. I dont belive it to be from my hard drive since I did not install any new components for the past year...

Did you try check disk?
The hard drive diagnostic would be to check on the health of your hard drive itself. Hard drives do fail at times.
Many of the above error characteristics point to network settings & still a possible virus.
And again I would examine your startup configuration.

I have tried the 1st link that you gave me, and can't find any errors in my hard drive, but the 2nd link does not work. and can you please help me on how can i know if my start up config is ok or not?
-
The link to belarc:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
was in order to ID your hard drive. Listed under Drives: Is it Maxtor? Seagate? IBM? etc?
Then this link was a list of diagnostic tools to use on your hard drive:
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
You need to create a bootable floppy from the manufacturer to test your hard drive.

This link pretty much sums up what is possible with msconfig:

If you want further help after reading the above just let us know.

Also the instructions for check disk are:
start > run > cmd
in the new window type chkdsk/f
when prompted to run on boot choose Y & reboot
this will check for & fix any disk errors.
This is not a hard drive test but a Windows test for Windows errors.

Drives:
35.74 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
23.64 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space
LITE-ON COMBO LTC-48161H [CD-ROM drive]
3.5" format removeable media [Floppy drive]
ST340810A [Hard drive] (40.02 GB) -- drive 0, s/n 5FB814SH, rev 3.60, SMART Status: Healthy
the second link does not work =( and by the way I have 3 partitions with my 40 GB Hadr Drive, C, D, and F. On F I have the latest version of Fedora installed... Does this have any thing to do with the errors...?

ST340810A [Hard drive] (40.02 GB) -- drive 0, s/n 5FB814SH, rev 3.60, SMART Status: Healthy
This is a Seagate hard drive. Although SMART shows Healthy you can further test if you want with this tool from Seagate: (Floppy Diskette Creator):
http://www.seagate.com/support/seato...toold_reg.html
_____________________________
The multiple partitions do offer a suggestion on how this problem wasn't solved by a re-install of XP.
The Fedora should not have a direct affect unless there is a multi boot issue.
Do you have a boot manager? Or how do you choose your boot options?

A further reference on your startup config can be found here:
Download & open HijackThis
http://www.isecurity.org.uk/downloads/hijackthis.exe
On the first screen choose: None of the above, just start the program
Then under Other stuff choose config then Misc Tools
Then Generate Startuplist log check both boxes for full & complete.
This will create a text file which you can attach or post back here.

And also just to confirm or elminate possible issues: did you ever run Check Disk?
