What is the make & model of the new PC?

It is normal for the Task Manager to show Idle Process @ 99% when nothing is happening. i.e. idle.

What are the exact error messages?

Pc Reverts to idle mode in the middle of trying to load software is this normal?

Computer is hybrid, Gigabyte GA-K8NS Ultra-939 Board, AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2GHZ Processor, 513MB 184 pin DDR memory, 2 off Lite-on cd/dvd write readers. Sapphire 256MB AGP Graphics Card.

The cd drive will recognise the disc and usually load the instalshield it then commences installation but freezes up.

Event Viewer error reads something like "error paging CRROM1" am at work so dont have full message!

    Any ideas?

Almost forgot, as i have read from other members i also have a hell of a lot of processes running in the task manager. Not sure if so many should be there? Especially as there are no programs running at the time!

Am not clear as to where or what you are refering to as Idle Mode.

If you view the Task Manager under Processes the Idle Process is the negative of CPU usage.
    Therefore 99% Idle = 1% CPU Usage.

Are you loading from the Master CD/DVD?

Are you sure the jumpers are correct?

Exact error messages would be helpful.

Also is the hard drive standard IDE or SATA/RAID?

Did you have any problem installing XP?

Is this a brand new setup?

20 to 30 processes starting is not unusual.

This is a good check for what is starting:

Windows XP was installed for me as was not confident on the process, The hard drive is SATA 150 80GB Seagate drive. Yes am loading from the master cd drive and i think the jumpers are correct!

Sorry to confuse the issue, try to explain better!

During the installation process all activity stops and the system becomes idle, surely it should be using some resources for the installation?

    Make any more sense?

Have you been able to install anything?

    Is this actually brand new?

Are you sure XP was installed with the motherboards SATA drivers?

Does XP & IE work OK?

Do all installation CD's exhibit the same behavior/ errors?

"During the installation process all activity stops and the system becomes idle"

Is there any error message? What exactly happens? Are you still able to use XP?

Again the exact errors, when you can get them, will help.

This is just a process of trying to decipher our words

Really sorry if not making much sense!

    Will start at beginning!

Have built a PC through the company i work for as components are dirt cheap. Our IT tech at work has built the pc, installed xp sp1, and also installed ms office 2003. he has installed all the util disks for the motherboard, graphics card etc and has said they went on fine.

All programs are legal originals bought through work of their suppliers.

I now ahve the pc at homa and have come to put on more software, i put the disk in and autorun bringhs up the instashield setup, i ok this and it goes in fine.

I run through the licence agreements for the programs and begin installation. It begins but then for some reason just stops. The disc is still spinning in the drive as i can hear it.

I can use xp fine over the top of this, but the only way to get out of the setup is to cancel it which it is slow to respond to, or to end the process in task manager.

Am so sorry does not make much sense - could do with doing this from home but have no internet access till next week!

Are you able to connect to Windows Update?

Can you download & install SP2?

    Then:

Is this happening with multiple disks? The exact same thing?

    What are these programs?

As said, when available, exact errors would help.

Will be able to get sp2 next week when broardband is set up!

Am trying to install, autocad 2004, britannica encyclopedia 2005, nero suite, happens on them all!

Do you think could be something to do with sp1?

It is the same on all the disks, it as if the cd is not being read properly or something as the disk is just spinning and spinning till i interupt it!
