My computer is dying. Please help!!!

    Hello all,

I CONSTANTLY get these 'Messenger Service' dialog boxes popping up whenever i am connected to the internet. They all say stuff like 'your registry is corrupted and needs to be fixed...go to www.reg-fix' etc. I get them all the time. And i mean all the time. If i leave the room and come back in 15mins there will be about 10 of them in the task bar. When i do a Norton virus scan it reports i have a virus but it cant fix, quarantine or delete it.

My PC is screwed and is always unstable and slow.

    Any solutions?

    Cheers.

update to SP2, turn your automatic updates on or order a sp2 cd from microsoft, this will make them go away. here is the link for the cd: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...s/default.mspx

Turn automatic updates on here: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...p/updates.mspx

Or, 1 last option, download from Windows Update here: http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu....aspx?ln=en-us

Regarding the computers speed, check your cmputer for spyware by downloading ad-aware here: http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10...age&tag=button
then, to protect your computer against more spyware, download this: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sgdownload.html
I also recomend you use the windows' "disk cleanup" and "defragmenter" from the start menu (under Accesories>System tools)

    Hope this helps

    Just to add:

You are getting those messages basically because you are not running a firewall.

The Messenger Service is an Internal XP feature for Administrators to message the users of the network.
It is commonly exploited by spammers.
You can turn off the service via the Services options under Admin Tools but the basic cause & flaw is the lack of a firewall.

As mentioned by madmikejt12 installing SP2 will start the XP firewall.
You can also get free versions of most major firewalls.

Also: as to your overall problems:

Please follow the instructions HERE 1st & HERE 2nd & then post your log in a new thread in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs section.
    (Not in this section please).

if you want a free firewall, but don't want to update to sp2 try these:
    zone alarm firewall: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/conte...reeDownload.jsp

If you're going for a free firewall, I would recomend Kerio Firewall:
