Hi , whenever i put a disc ( cd or dvd ) in my dvd writer my pc locks up . i cant do anything with it but press the reset button . has anyone come across this before or have any suggestions on how to fix it ??

My PC:
abit as8 mobo
p4 3.2ghz (1mb cache)
saphire radeon 9800 pro graphics
1gb corsair xms low latency memory (dual channel pc3200)
1 x maxtor 160 gb hdd
1x maxtor 120 gb hdd (both diamondmax 9)
nec 16x dvd dual layer writer
dvd rom drive
os win xp sp2

Is this a new problem? Was this drive working OK previously?

Check the Device Manager: RT click My Computer then click Manage then Device Manager or go to start/run/ devmgmt.msc for any "!" by the DVD/CD Drives.

Also: look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.

i looked in the event manager and there were a few errors showing up CDROM . and a suggested solution is a faulty cable so i will try a new one .
