PC shuts down during 3D games...

Hi, I bought my Advent PC in October last year and it worked fine for months, but now shuts down at unpredictable moments during any game that uses 3D - so far during Boiling Point, Everquest2, Delta Force, Sims2, Rome Total War, etc...however it is fine as long as I surf the net or play any 2D game such as Icewind Dale.

What happens is the screen switches off but the game sounds continue for a while, then the puter resets itself...only sometimes it just remains humming with the power light on, and has to be switched off manualy at the power supply switch on the back of the tower. When this happens the silver power box inside the towwer dies and has to be replaced. So far this has happened twice, and PC world said they will not replace it a third time, yet they are at a loss as to what the problem may be.

I took it round to them and they ran a test on it while it stayed on for 3 days running but with no identifiable problems.

When it resets I get a message saying the puter has recovered from a serious error - it gives the following details:

    locals/temp/WER616b.dir00/mini063005.dmp and temp/WER616b.dir001/sysdata.xml

I have an ATI Radion x600 with the latest Catalyst driver download (I downloaded it in an attempt to stop the problems, but no luck). My PC is a pentium 4 with XP...please help, it's stopedmy stepchildren's enjoyment of all the games and PC World have been no help. I would be very greatful for any vice, I don't know what to do at the moment.

Are you saying that the Power Supply Unit has had to have been replaced twice? Is that "the silver power box"?

Do you know what the wattage is?

    Is this the exact model:

    http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/sto...uct&sku=537855

If not can you ID the exact model?

Also show us that dump log:

Go to start | search (type in) .dmp
Note the location of your latest .dmp file.

    Then:

    1) Download and install the
    Debugging Tools from Microsoft
    2) Download and install this
    debugwiz
    3) Open the Wiz & Browse to, or paste in the path to, your latest .dmp file.
    4) After the Wiz creates a Text document attach it back to this thread.

And Also for the future please change your dump log setting via:
Right click My Computer then click Properties then Advanced then Startup and Recovery | Settings:
    Write debugging information:
    change to Complete memory dump.

Ok, first of all I want to thank you for replying. I have just wiped the reply that took me half an hour to wite, gah!!

The PC I have is similar, it's a T9401, and I've tried all sorts with the power - even giving the tower its' own wall socket instead of sharing the strip (though this is also via a second anti-surge strip) but to no avail. The tech who came and replaced the silver power box twice assured me the model itself was sound, and that the power supplied should be ok - the only thing they suggested after running a test that showd no problems was that it might be overheating, which I am unsure of seeing as it worked fine running Rome etc when I bought it in Sept, until the first shutdown in January.

Having followed you advice (thanks!) I have copied info from the first and last shutdowns. I'm not sure how much is reevant to you so I have included all of it, and I apologise in advance for whichever bits I needn't have bothered with...

Here is a text of the last shutdoown. The reason I have included both is that they seem to have different reasons for shutting down.

    ATTEMPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY (be)
An attempt was made to write to readonly memory. The guilty driver is on the
stack trace (and is typically the current instruction pointer).
When possible, the guilty driver's name (Unicode string) is printed on
the bugcheck screen and saved in KiBugCheckDriver.
    Arguments:
Arg1: aaf288f2, Virtual address for the attempted write.
    Arg2: 0a426121, PTE contents.
    Arg3: 80558244, (reserved)
    Arg4: 0000000a, (reserved)

My three teenage stepkids did use the computer a lot and I did have trouble with stuff from porn sites, alternative dial up programmes etc, but I've run McAfee and pretty much sorted it hopefully, plus they're much more creful now.

Well I really hope this helps...you've been a great help to me - I did what you said regarding changing the .dmp path also - I would scan these shutdown readouts properly but I have to get ready for work...will have a proper look at them later.

Thank you once again for your help, it is very much appreciated.

I am still curious as to the silver power box: do you know what it is?

Just a quick view of your logs:

    1. an ATI driver
    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d...d_stp_agho.asp

    2. a Realtek Audio driver
    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d...d_stp_ovrp.asp

When you installed the latest Catalyst did you uninstall the old first?

    Also:

Check your direct X settings via: Start/Run/ dxdiag | Display
    as well as | Sound

    Also:

If you are comfortable opening the case: check that the graphics card has plenty of space around it. If there are other cards in an adjacent slot try moving to one further away.
Also: just as a test try to play one of these games with the case open. Maybe even blow a room fan into the open case.

    Also:

As to the virus issue: run this: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
And if you feel so inclined:
Please follow owen's Instructions and then post your log in a new thread in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs section. (Not in this section please).

Finally (for now): run this scan & post back the info under Main Circuit Board
    http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

And: post any new dump logs.

Thanks for your help, I will try these now.

The silver power box is a large silver box inside the bck top of the tower which the technition called the 'power box.' It's what the power lead plugs into in the back.

I'm suprised to find the .dmp logs refer to two different problems. When I refer to the help link on the 'this computer has shut down due to a serious error' message I always get a web-link to the graphics card, and, as I say, it can run for days on the net but shuts down on 3D games.

I did however install a (Realtek) 6.5 sound system just before Christmas and had a lot of trouble with getting it to work due to a lousy driver. Maybe there is some sort of clash going on? Ok, I will try these things out and post back in the relevant places, although it may take a while for me to figure out what I'm doing due to being a puter-dunce!

    Many thanks! :0)

All computers have a PSU (Power Supply Unit).
I was just uncertain if that is what you were refering to.
The fact that 2 of them have burned out is very strange!

    Hi folks,

I also have an Advent machine with the same problem:
    Advent T9401 P4, 3.6GHz
    1024 DDR RAm
    2 x 250 SATA HDD
    16x DVD, 8x DVDRW Multi(Dual layer)
ATI Raedon X600XT 256MB PCI Express
    TV Tuner

Doom 3 runs like a dream, but 'Delta Force Extreme' will stop it in its tracks everytime as will 'Act Of War'. And I too am at a complete loss to understand why.....

I tried the driver u/g and if anything it made matters worse - I'm thinking of working backwards through the drivers until I find an earlier one that works.

Stangely enough DFE works fine on my other machine with a NVIDA GeForce4 MX 420 with only 64Mb of RAM......

So diggergig, you are not alone, and if there is a soloution to this I'd love to hear it!

    Len

lenxx55, if you have a problem, please start a new thread rather than hijacking other peoples threads as stated on the DAL rules.

have you upgraded any hardware since you got your machine?
