can not get OS to start
Hello all. I hope someone can help me. I appreciate any direction or insight.
Here is my problem:
I hope someone can help or point me in the right direction.
I have a Micron Millinium PC, 3 years old. XP Home, 512 MB, 2 /60 gb hard drives, athlon 2000. Nothing has changed except new users turned the PC on with the power switch (I usually hit the enter key to start) Yesterday, my curser repeatedly froze on the screen (the PC froze and had to be shut off manually and rebooted. Today, the problem got worse and I now have the "blue screen of death" where the operating system will not load.
I tried "http://www.memtest86.com" (a website with downloadable files to boot your machine and test for memory issues). I downloaded, plugged in the floppy with the files, tried to boot and the same thing happened.
Is this an OS failure for sure or could the disk I boot from be corrupt?
I tried the OS recovery disk from Micron PC with no results.
I appreciate any help-I want to at least save my files...
Thank you,
Gary

This could be alot of things. Most likely not XP.
My first suspects would be the BIOS boot block if not the hard drive.
If you could provide exact error messages as you try things that would help.
For example when you power on what exactly happens?
Do you get a BIOS POST screen or a Micron Logo screen?
Do you know how to enter the BIOS Setup?
Do you get errors such as: Operating system not found? Or: Cannot read from disk?
Is you hard drive detected by the BIOS?
What happens with MemTest? A blue screen? Or blank black?
Do you have the micron manual? Does it have info on BIOS Settings & Upgrades?
What exactly happens when you try to boot the Recovery disk?

Is this the machine:

They list Hard Drive Diagnostics here:

Do you know the Hard Drive manufacturer?

I would be looking through the literature for a flashable BIOS for your board.
This is assuming of course that you can boot from the floppy drive.
If the floppy is not bootable and the setup is set to boot from the floppy you may need to open the machine and manually clear the CMOS.
There should be instructions in the manual.

Thank you for your response and feedback.
I have listed your questions and will add my answers after each.

I agree, It seems as though the disk will not engage to load the OS
My first suspects would be the BIOS boot block if not the <a style='text-decoration: none; border-bottom: 3px double;' href="http://www.qklinkserver.com/lm/rtl3.asp?si=70&k=hard%20drive&st=0" onmouseover="window.status='hard drive'">hard drive</a>.
This seems logical-I have always started my machine by pushing the Enter key on my keyboard. My relatives came to stay and used my PC. One pushed the monitor ON/OFF and the other used the regular Power button to start the machine.
If you could provide exact error messages as you try things that would help.
There are no errors. When I start the machine, it just goes to the blank, blue screen
For example when you power on what exactly happens?
Two days ago, I had the machine running OKa couple of days ago but the screen and cursor would freeze all of the sudden and I would have to shut down manually and reboot. The problem turned worse the next day and that is when I got the blue screen of death.
Do you get a BIOS POST screen or a Micron Logo screen?
I do not know what the BIOS POST Screen is. There is nothing except blank screen. Nothing happens..
Do you know how to enter the BIOS Setup?
No
Do you get errors such as: Operating system not found? Or: Cannot read from disk?
No
Is you hard drive detected by the BIOS?
That seems like it could be the problem. Could the other users have created that problem when they used the PC?
What happens with MemTest? A blue screen? Or blank black?
MemTest did nothing..blue screen
Do you have the micron manual? Does it have info on BIOS Settings & Upgrades?
I am reading after I post this message
What exactly happens when you try to boot the Recovery disk?
Will not engage or do anything
I hope this narrows down the possible problems. I am certainly no expert but perhaps wishful thinking is hoping it is some sort of BIOS issue.
In regards to your question of my machine, it is three and a half years old and not listed.
Thanks.
Thank you for any help

Can you ID your machine from this list:
http://support.mpccorp.com/platforms/index.html?ID=1
Did you find the BIOS Setup? (Perhaps F2 or Delete at startup).

it was the monitor...I cannot believe it.
Thank you for your help.
