Audio suddenly stops

    Audio suddenly stops

When playing audio/video files, my audio will suddenly stop. If it's a video file, the video will continue without the audio and if it's an audio file the file itself will stop. The only way to get it to start again is to shut the program down and restart. This happens quite often and while using both winamp and wmp. I've tried updating, uninstalling/reinstalling all audio/video software, but to no avail. Device mananger says everything is fine and Norton hasn't detected any foul play. I'm running an e-machines T2742, 2.7 ghz celeron I bought on ebay. I know it's a piece of garbage, but it beats the 333 mhz hp I had before it. Any suggestions on what could be causing this annoyance would be greatly appreciated.

Is this a sound card or onboard?

    Check: Start/Run/ dxdiag | Sound

Also look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.

Also view your Error Log via:
    [1] Start Menu
    [2] Help and Support
    [3] Pick a Task
    [4] Tools
    [5] Advanced System Information
    [6] View the Error Log

    I believe it's onboard. (Realtek AC97).
The direct x diagnostics came back fine.
The x list is pretty much limited to what follows:
    • cdrom : 7
    • W32Time : 29 or 17
    • Application Hang : 1002, 1001
    • Application error : 1004, 1000, 1001, 1005

I never get an error msg when the audio stops, nor does my software ever lock up, but usually I cannot get anything else to play unless I close the software and reopen it. And even then sometimes it will not work. Appreciate your help.

Can you get any details by clicking on those application lines?

    Especially the hang '02 & '01?

Hanging application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

    and

    Fault bucket 127043675.

I think the first one is whatever is causing the problem as I have found similiar errors for wimamp.exe and wmplayer.exe.

That hang was IE. Are these streaming files that you have problems with or files on your computer as well?

    Any problem with audio CD's?

If this is an IE issue a first attempt to repair would be to run sfc /scannow

It seems to happen with both streaming files and files on my hard drive and it also happens with cds and dvds. I ran sfc /scannow and then played a file with the same result. However, I did notice that after a few minutes the file started playing again, something I'd never had the patience to test before.

You said you tried updating the drivers: where did you find the drivers?

    Looking here:
    http://www.emachines.com/support/pro...es&model=T2742

    I see the chipset:
    http://support.intel.com/support/chi.../CS-009244.htm

    But not the board itself.

    Perhaps try this scan: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

What is under: Main Circuit Board?

    Also: what is under: Multimedia?

I ran the belarc scan and for main circuit board it just said intel corp and gave a serial number.

    Multimedia just said Realtek AC'97

The good news is that I went to realtek.com and downloaded the driver again. Whether it is the same one I downloaded before, I'm not sure. But so far so good. I was able to play files without interruption, but have not had time to test it thoroughly.

I guess for the time being my problem is solved, though I'm not sure why the new driver fixed it this time and not last. If I have more problems I'll let you know.

Thanks a million for the support!
